Oped, Editorial, Published on 10/12/2021

» On Wednesday, Thais witnessed justice being served fair and square. In a trial that will be remembered as a landmark environmental case, the Supreme Court handed down jail terms of about three years to construction tycoon Premchai Karnasutra and two accomplices for poaching in Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary.

Justice in wildlife saga

News, Editorial, Published on 20/03/2019

» More than a year after construction tycoon Premchai Karnasuta was arrested at a camping site inside Thungyai Naresuan wildlife sanctuary with a firearm and the carcasses of rare endangered animals including a pheasant and black leopard, justice has been served -- partially.

OPINION

New year, fresh hope

News, Editorial, Published on 01/01/2019

» Another year, another promise of an election -- only this time the promise appears to be real. The fourth year and part of the fifth under the military regime were hardly noteworthy. The nation survived but did not prosper, economically or morally. There is almost universal hope in every corner of the country that 2019 will be different.

Ray of hope for rule of law

News, Editorial, Published on 30/11/2018

» Much to the public's distress, the court case against construction tycoon Premchai Karnasuta, who was allegedly involved in poaching on a trip to Thungyai wildlife sanctuary, began this week. A myriad of pressures surround this case given the status of Mr Premchai whose business fortune puts him high up on Thailand's who's who list.

All wild species deserve saving

News, Editorial, Published on 17/06/2018

» In a setback for animal rights activists, a planned provision under the Anti-Cruelty against Animals and Animal Welfare Act by the Ministry of Agriculture will selectively name what species are worthy of protection.

OPINION

Threat to justice

News, Editorial, Published on 09/04/2018

» The Office of Public Prosecution or a higher authority must correct or justify the error it made last week. The Region 7 office has startled and disappointed the public over the killing of the black leopard and other protected species at Thungyai-Naresuan sanctuary in February.

OPINION

Keep your powder dry

News, Editorial, Published on 29/03/2018

» Conservationists and citizens have good reason for the current outrage over the recent poaching case at Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary. The shooting of the extremely rare black leopard in itself was a despicable act. Skinning and eating the big cat, as well as killing a deer and pheasant, showed a contempt for the law, nature and sheer decency. Worried about a whitewash, the country's best-known conservationist wants to organise a major public demonstration of concern.

OPINION

Hunting saga haunts regime

News, Editorial, Published on 08/03/2018

» More than a month after the Thungyai Naresuan hunting saga involving a multi-billionaire flared up, police handling the case have categorically failed to secure the public's trust. This is a shame.

OPINION

Premchai a liability to his own business

Oped, Editorial, Published on 11/02/2018

» TIT, or “This is Thailand”, is the phrase that has been commonly used here for years when people make fun of the country’s law enforcement, supposedly good governance and other systems. During the past few months, Thailand has been caught in the debate on how the law and the government are going to deal with Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, who has been caught wearing 25 luxury watches worth close to 40 million baht in total but had failed to include them in his assets declaration. The agency which is investigating the case against him is led by his former secretary, while his alibi has been that he had borrowed the watches from his friends, one of whom has passed away.
