Curb S112 abuse

Oped, Postbag, Published on 05/09/2025

» Re: "Thaksin acquittal sparks debate", (BP, Aug 31). To prevent abuse of our lese majeste law, S112, we should follow law Professor Olarn Thinbangtieo of Burapha University's suggestion that all lese majeste complaints be vetted by a body of prosecutors, judges, academics, and civil society representatives, operating like a prosecutor's screening panel but with broader representation, before proceeding to court.

Outlook still bleak

» Andy Cule's Dec 13 letter asks the reasonable question as to why vaccinated tourists would need to quarantine when coming to Thailand. Unfortunately, the vaccines have only been found to be effective in stopping symptoms of the virus, but have not been tested to see if they prevent infection and therefore the ability to infect others.

Foolish drug war

News, Postbag, Published on 10/08/2019

» Re: "Weed use a 'medical minefield'", (BP, Aug 8). If countries like Canada and the US are not intimidated by threats from the wrong-headed International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) that is stuck in the hysteria-driven mistakes of the ignorant past and vicious drug war heyday, why should Thailand be terrified of its threats to punish good citizens who need other medicines? The whole idea of punishing another group for the perceived crimes of others is morally indefensible, however popular it might be in the sanctions imposed by US presidents intent on forcing others to bow to their populist will.
