» Over the past few years, LA-based artist Sondre Lerche has made it his own little tradition to cover pop hits from the year that's been as a holiday gift to his fans. His past covers range from Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball and Drake's Hotline Bling to Sia's Chandelier and Beyoncé's Countdown. To cap off the end of the decade, Lerche has stepped up his game by essentially pulling a Ryan Adams circa 2015. But, instead of Taylor Swift, it's the former queen of pop, Britney Spears.

» As tradition dictates, we rummaged through some 200 singles we'd reviewed over the past 12 months and narrowed it down to 25. Here's what we learned in 2019: Thai fusion is still very much a go-to for most up-and-coming bands including Southern Boys and Suthep Entertainment, who both look to their roots for inspiration. This year also had its fair share of blazingly political moments, thanks to Solange, Lana Del Rey and our own rap troupe Rap Against Dictatorship. One final note, even though this list is split into two parts spreading across this and next week, these tracks are not ranked and their order is completely arbitrary in nature.
The age of angst

» Maybe it's a sign of the times, but taking a look at the young, emerging artists of today, you might notice that a great many of them tend to speak openly about their anxieties and insecurities. Much like her contemporaries Mitski, Hana Vu and Beabadoobee, 18-year-old singer Griff channels all of these feelings through unfiltered lyrics that read like a page out of her diary.
The grey area

» To this day, no one can really say for certain what happened to Dear Tommy, a supposed follow-up to Chromatics' stunning 2012 opus Kill For Love. According to the popular (and, perhaps, most credible) myth, the record and its previously released singles were scrapped entirely by the band's producer Johnny Jewel, re-recorded, and then … silence. Dear Tommy, it seems, is being put on the back burner, and in its place we have their latest release, Closer To Grey, instead.
Driving ambition

» Brisbane-born singer-songwriter and rapper Grace Shaw is not afraid to dream big. "Anything is possible if you just say that you're going to do it. That's honestly such a lifehack," she said recently in an interview with Fader. Shaw, who performs as Mallrat, went on to mention that she hopes to one day write songs for artists like Rihanna, Beyoncé and Camila Cabello. Her aspirations may sound rather ambitious, especially for a relatively new talent. But looking at the 21-year-old's resume, which includes two solid EP releases, a tour with fellow Aussie rapper Allday and opening for Post Malone, you can't help but wonder that she might be on to something.

» Behind the moniker MorMor stands a Toronto native named Seth Nyquist. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter only started churning out music last year and his name is already on everyone's lips. This is mostly due to the strength of his debut EP Heaven's Only Wishful, a nifty self-produced collection of five songs boasting the lush bedroom pop DNA and the sultry sophistication of R&B and disco. Clocking in just under half-an-hour, the EP managed to showcase Nyquist's knack for seamlessly blending genres and creating the sound and narratives which are entirely his own.
Let England shake

So begins Merrie Land, the second LP by The Good, The Bad & The Queen, a supergroup made up of Blur frontman Damon Albarn, guitarist Simon Tong from The Verve, bassist Paul Simonon from The Clash and Nigerian drummer Tony Allen. Titled Introduction, the album's brief opener is based on an excerpt from Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales -- the perfect premise for a record concerned with the uncertain future of a post-Brexit UK.
Genius Knows No Gender

» There's a certain genius to how female indie musicians Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus have banded together under the name boygenius (yes, all lowercase). The aim here, it seems, is to draw attention away from their gender that's often taken for granted in the male-dominated scene. Having met and bonded at the same tours and festivals over the years, the three artists realised that, not only do they share artistic visions, they also complement one another's talents.

» In case you're unaware, the hip-hop scene in Thailand is blowing up right now. Underground talents are getting unprecedented exposure on mainstream TV reality shows The Rapper and Show Me The Money. All of this crazy hype can (and should) be credited to the Bangkok-based online community Rap Is Now, which has played an integral part in the re-emergence of the local hip-hop scene. Their infamous "battles", now in their fourth season, have bestowed upon us talents like UrboyTJ, Youngohm and Twopee Southside -- all of whom are currently basking in the glow of mainstream success.
