» The beep of the horn was quite loud. It came from a flat-bottom electric-powered boat cruising along Klong Phadung Krung Kasem. The boat operator gave the signal to let passengers on the Hua Lamphong pier know of its arrival.

» The pictures of people kayaking and paddle boarding along Klong Ong Ang were still vivid in my memory. The activity was organised in the middle of this month to promote the canal makeover as well as Klong Ong Ang Walking Street. The photos triggered me to visit the site to see if the canal's water was clean enough for people to kayak or if I could find anyone doing so during my visit last Saturday.

» A row boat approached the pier at Ban Thung Yi Peng (also spelled Ban Thung Yee Pheng) on Koh Lanta Yai in Krabi. Lining both sides of the waterway are dense mangrove forests. This is thanks to the efforts of the Community Based Tourism Club of Ban Thung Yi Peng, which has helped protect and replant mangrove trees for almost 20 years.

» When he was young, Therdsak Yenjura always walked a hiking trail from the foothills of Doi Suthep to visit Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. The route, which took him a couple of hours, passed Wat Pha Lat, a forest monastery located about halfway to the destination. He sometimes made a stop to pay respect to old Buddha images housed in a ruined concrete structure of the temple.

» Samut Songkhram, Thailand's smallest province, also is a small wonder. The coastal province along the Gulf of Thailand is about a two-hour drive from Bangkok. It has only three districts -- Muang, Amphawa and Bang Khonthi. Yet it is packed with historical and cultural attractions, especially along the Mae Klong River that flows through the heart of the province and ends in the sea.
