» Darkness swiftly enveloped the orange sky after dusk. Yellow lights came on up and down the mountainside, illuminating the ski slopes. The temperature, which had been 2C in the afternoon, dropped to a bone-chilling -8C at night. The freezing weather discouraged me from leaving my warm room, but there were plenty of hardy souls out enjoying some late-night skiing.

» It's normal to see oxen on the streets of India. However, during my recent trip to Jaipur, I was surprised to see people riding camels and elephants on the other side of the road, while our minibus was stuck in traffic alongside public buses, cars, horse carriages, rickshaws and swarms of motorcycles.

» Roosters crowed an hour before dawn. Since every family in the hilly village of Ban Huay Tong Kor (also spelled Ban Huai Tong Ko) in Mae Hong Son raised chickens, the cry was pretty loud and seemed to be nonstop. It could wake up even those drunk on local rice wine from the night before.
