Thai Conversation Starters That Should Be Cancelled

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 04/02/2022

» At the risk of sounding like a social justice warrior and woke snowflake, I find various casual lines in Thai conversation to be problematic. They may sound innocent upon first hearing but if you really dissect them you may find them to be verbal putdown focused on perceived flaws and laced with micro-aggressions. Think I may be overreacting? Check them out below and reasons why I think they are offensive. Most importantly, I have also come up with sassy retorts for your entertainment.

2021 Songkran Bingo

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/04/2021

» As you already know, Songkran this year is on, albeit with much less splashes and debauchery. There seems to be more don'ts than dos that the authorities would like us to abide by in order to safely celebrate Thai New Year during the pandemic. Basically, the traditional ways of celebrating -- religious practices and ceremonies, Buddha image bathing and pouring water onto elders' palms -- are in while the layman fun that we associate with the pre-Covid-19 Songkran era such as water wars, concerts and foam parties are out, for now.

The Year of ...

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/12/2020

» Let's face facts, people. 2020 hasn't been kind to us but is indeed eventful -- mostly for bad reasons. The pandemic cast a gloom over a big chunk of the calendar and, while we hoped for a reprieve during the year-end festivities after having things relatively under control and -- boom! -- it's back, ruining our jolly mood and forcing the cancellations of many NYE parties and events. I'm sure the last 359 days have us thinking and rethinking about a lot of things in our lives and what 2020 would go down as in our personal history. Here is what 2020 means to me (and hopefully you, too).

That's the Way the (Corona) Cookie Crumbles

» One way for us to cope with the pandemic is to look on the bright side, but some have taken a step further and see the delicious side too. Not sure what I'm getting at? You see, there are coronavirus-inspired foods that have been circulated online to make you hungry and hahaha at the same time. Has this whet your appetite yet? Allow me to present to you a five-course Covid-19 set menu. Bon appétit! g

People Who Do Worse Jobs Than You

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 15/03/2019

» At the risk of sounding like a Debbie Downer (or should I say Sad Somchai), there may be days when we question whether we're doing well or enough at our jobs e.g. making a typo and struggling to write something relevant and fun on a weekly basis. And once that feeling takes over, you can console yourself by looking for people who're at worse at their jobs compared to you, automatically patting yourself on the back. The good news is that you don't have to look far -- and I've done that for you, dear reader. These examples should leave you thinking, "I'm not that bad."
