1% GDP growth impacts will be severe

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 21/08/2025

» Where did I get the idea that GDP growth in the second half of 2025 would only be 1.0%? The answer is the government, as the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) told me so.

Will Thailand's economy cheat death?

News, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 23/01/2025

» 'He and the other survivors have briefly cheated death, but will not be able to evade their fate for very long." A movie buff will know this comes from Final Destination and the "he" in the quote refers to Alex Browing, the movie's main character.

Data paints economy as 'black hole'

News, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 12/12/2024

» I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand. It is beyond my comprehension that the non-performing loan (NPL) level rose 14.1% in Q3 while the economy expanded 3.0%. Shouldn't it be the opposite when debtor's income rises?

Banks that don't want money bode ill

News, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 11/07/2024

» When is the last time readers experienced a situation like this? One takes money to deposit in a bank and the bank says please take your money elsewhere as we have no use for it. Such an unusual situation is happening in Thailand at this moment. Thai banks are reducing their credit portfolios and, consequently, reducing their needs for funding.

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 18/04/2024

» The purpose of this article is to educate the public about the real issue of the digital wallet scheme. The issue is not "HOW to get the 500 billion baht?" but "Is there 500 billion baht AVAILABLE to be borrowed?"

OPINION

Whoever takes office will inherit a mess

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 15/06/2023

» The election result is clear and the MOU to form a 312-seat government in the 500-seat parliament is agreed. But who will lead Thailand and its economy for the next four years is unclear. Whether it will be a pro-equality government, pro-growth government, or even a pro-big-spending government remains in doubt.

World faces prospect of financial tumult

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 23/03/2023

» Today, I was supposed to present the third article, Managing Household Debt, in the series "Changing Thailand". In fact, I have finished drafting a payment reduction model which could reduce monthly debt payments by 4.6 times without the hair-cutting debt principal or requiring government financial support. But I will delay that article for now.
