Some shock therapy or slow healing?

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 02/04/2026

» Do readers prefer shock therapy or slow healing? This is not a health question, but an important economic one.

OPINION

1% GDP growth impacts will be severe

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 21/08/2025

» Where did I get the idea that GDP growth in the second half of 2025 would only be 1.0%? The answer is the government, as the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) told me so.

OPINION

Thailand has lost its last growth engine

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 29/05/2025

» Thailand has lost its last engine of growth and people are abandoning hope for a decent life.

OPINION

Data paints economy as 'black hole'

News, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 12/12/2024

» I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand. It is beyond my comprehension that the non-performing loan (NPL) level rose 14.1% in Q3 while the economy expanded 3.0%. Shouldn't it be the opposite when debtor's income rises?

Digital wallet scheme hits another snag

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 13/06/2024

» The new financing problem of the 10,000-baht cash handout, commonly known as the Digital Wallet Scheme (DW), has not made much noise in the media. This may be because the government wants this to be a non-issue, but in reality, it is a serious one that could wreck the entire scheme.

OPINION

Soft or hard landing for Thai economy?

News, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 08/02/2024

» Personally, I am sure the Thai economy will crash this year. I can even estimate the time when the crash will start. It is likely to be the month of May as several big economic bombs will explode that month. Confirmation of this belief came in December 2023's economic data. The most disturbing part is industry's capacity utilisation rate of 56.2% (seasonally adjusted), which is the second lowest in the world. The world's lowest is Nigeria!

OPINION

Better options to govt's cash handout

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 19/10/2023

» The 10,000-baht cash handout scheme has been under heavy criticism. More than 100 economists, led by two ex-Bank of Thailand governors, oppose the scheme that would bring more harm than good.

OPINION

Pheu Thai's cash handouts a likely flop

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 24/08/2023

» The title of this article says it all. Pheu Thai Party's flagship economic stimulus policy of handing out 10,000 baht to all Thais aged above 16 years old, with an estimated cost of 560 billion baht, will most likely fail to stimulate (or jump-start) the economy from the recent economic slump.

OPINION

New govt faces 4 economic time bombs

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 18/05/2023

» The election result is already out and Thailand is heading for a big policy change. As the party with most seats, the Move Forward Party will form the government. The second place-getter -- the Pheu Thai Party -- has agreed to be in the coalition. These two parties, however, have totally different views on how to run the economy.

OPINION

World faces prospect of financial tumult

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 23/03/2023

» Today, I was supposed to present the third article, Managing Household Debt, in the series "Changing Thailand". In fact, I have finished drafting a payment reduction model which could reduce monthly debt payments by 4.6 times without the hair-cutting debt principal or requiring government financial support. But I will delay that article for now.
