Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 02/04/2026

» Do readers prefer shock therapy or slow healing? This is not a health question, but an important economic one.

OPINION

In an uncertain world, gold is a comfort

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 05/02/2026

» With Thai citizens heading to the polls this Sunday to decide which party will form the next government, I have decided to postpone my article on the economic crisis for another two weeks.

OPINION

Policy options for an overvalued baht

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 25/12/2025

» This is the last article of 2025. I have to thank readers for following my articles throughout the years. I believe I wrote my first article for the Bangkok Post in January 2020. So, it has been a five-year collaboration with the paper. Thank you, Bangkok Post.

OPINION

The baht is almost as good as gold

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 18/09/2025

» The baht is undoubtedly the strongest currency in the region. Over this year, the baht has appreciated 4.45% against the dollar while the Vietnamese dong has depreciated 8.47%.

OPINION

Backing Trump on tariffs, not on tone

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 17/04/2025

» I'm not a Donald Trump supporter. On the contrary, I dislike the US president for his abrasive behaviour. For Mr Trump, everything is nothing but numbers. Compassion has no meaning in his dictionary.

BoT, govt may have wrong inflation data

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 17/10/2024

» At the time of writing (Tuesday), the Bank of Thailand's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) had not met to decide on the policy interest rate which is currently set at 2.50%. The panel was scheduled to meet yesterday and the committee was under pressure to lower the rate by 25 basis points. The pressure arises from many months of low inflation rates and the recent strong Thai baht. Several central banks in the region have cut their policy interest rates for those two reasons. The latest one is the Bank of Korea.

OPINION

BoT ought to revise exchange rate policy

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 26/09/2024

» This is not the usual time slot for my article. My articles are usually published every other Thursday. The next one was for Oct 3. However, I feel that the "too strong" Thai baht requires immediate attention.

OPINION

Structural flaws impede our economy

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 21/03/2024

» It took Japan 17 years to learn that a macroeconomic policy is for stabilising an economy, not stimulating growth. Due to low economic growth in the "lost decade" following the financial crisis in the autumn of 1997, the Bank of Japan adopted an unthinkable monetary policy of a negative interest rate in 2007 by pushing the short-term policy rate down to -0.1%.

OPINION

Time to stop making empty promises

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 07/03/2024

» The Nikkei 225 Index just broke 40,000, surpassing the record high of 1989. The stellar stock market performance happened amid the fact that Japan's economy is officially in recession after two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.

OPINION

Pheu Thai's giveaway might just work

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 20/04/2023

» If one plans to read only one economic analysis article for this year, this is it.
