Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 02/04/2026

» Do readers prefer shock therapy or slow healing? This is not a health question, but an important economic one.

OPINION

Trump's tariff trade war is no accident

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 01/05/2025

» President Donald Trump's tariff policy has received numerous criticisms from various parties, including several Nobel Prize laureates, for being against the economic principles of free trade.

Key to success: Give what Trump wants

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 10/04/2025

» This article is for all nations wanting US President Donald Trump to lower or eliminate reciprocal tariffs, not just Thailand. I feel that the issue is of immediate urgency, and I am writing this article as a special edition.

OPINION

Data paints economy as 'black hole'

News, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 12/12/2024

» I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand. It is beyond my comprehension that the non-performing loan (NPL) level rose 14.1% in Q3 while the economy expanded 3.0%. Shouldn't it be the opposite when debtor's income rises?

BoT ought to revise exchange rate policy

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 26/09/2024

» This is not the usual time slot for my article. My articles are usually published every other Thursday. The next one was for Oct 3. However, I feel that the "too strong" Thai baht requires immediate attention.

OPINION

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 04/05/2023

» This article, after a few interruptions, is Part 3 of "Changing Thailand: The Series." It began with a prologue that presented an overview, emphasising that Thailand has been lagging behind its neighbours in terms of per-capita income growth.

OPINION

Changing Thailand: a series (prologue)

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 23/02/2023

» Before I start talking economic jargon filled with figures, let me explain Thailand's economic situation in plain language.

OPINION

Interest gap could spell economic peril

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 06/10/2022

» On a recent Monday, the Fed called an emergency meeting. The discussion topics were not made known. Could it possibly be about turmoil in the UK bond market and the financial troubles of large investment banks? At this fragile time, the world cannot afford another Lehman Brothers-type disaster.

OPINION

Hiked wages could ease current slump

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 24/02/2022

» Before getting to the main story of raising wages, I have a point of concern to raise. That is the unusual movement of Thai baht exchange rates. Theoretically, this is the time the baht should be depreciating because of rising current account deficits due to the high prices of imported oil.

OPINION

Omicron's threat to global supply chain

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 13/01/2022

» By definition, a supply chain disruption is any event that causes a disruption in the production, sale, or distribution of products. Supply chain disruptions can include events such as natural disasters, regional conflicts, and pandemics.
