Society magnified

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 19/07/2019

» Contending with the hustle and bustle of today's post-modern society on a daily basis can often feel like a never-ending sickness. Christopher Wise, a Bangkok based travel photographer and co-founder of art space and bar WTF in Sukhumvit 51, has set out to capture this innate wide-spread feeling of being overwhelmed in today's world by using everyday objects to create life-sized models of microscopic organisms.

All You Need Is Paco

» I may not be an art enthusiast/fanatic but I do appreciate any work of art when I see one. The amount of visual creativity and artistic effort one has put into something is quite admirable and rewarding for them. So when I stepped into Paco Bangkok, a small but cosy smoothie bowl cafe whose owners inject a bit of art into their desserts, you can colour me impressed with what I saw. But would I also be impressed with what I tasted? Read on to find out.

Loud and proud

» We've finally hit the half way mark of the year -- June and if you've been out and about, you may have noticed rainbow-coloured decorations (or at least rainbows on your Facebook newsfeed ) because we are in Pride Month. The month in which the LGBTQ+ community promote and express themselves and celebrate gender diversity and sexual identity. The gay pride movement is celebrated throughout the world ever since the Stonewall Riots of 1969 in Manhattan, New York, a pivotal event that led to creation of the movement for LGBT rights. Prominent figures in the community tell GURU what pride means to them and what are they proud. We've also compiled a few pride celebration events around the city that are worth everyone's attention.

Real Life Fantasy

» When you were a kid, you probably have read countless fairy tales with magical lands and wondrous kingdoms. As a child, you would have dreamt of living in places that were possible only in the imagination -- beautiful gardens, charming castles and serene lakes. While you may not exactly live in an actual castle on a faraway land, Khao Yai's Hotel Labaris is the next best thing to living in an idyllic, fairy tale world. I visited this magical place to give you the lowdown on becoming king of a faraway land.

» Tourism can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it can generate profit for the economy while on the other it can exploit natural resources. This problem is all too relevant in Thailand but there are niche travel companies that offer unique experiences providing positive benefits to our culture. If you're bored of going to the typical Thai tourist spots and long to do things more than the average tourist, then look no further. Guru complied a list of travel companies making a difference in the country.

Crafted goodness

» Eating puff pies has been a pleasant childhood memory as far as I can remember in which my mum would come home from work with the golden crusted treats. Imagine my delight when, during a recent stroll amid the hustle and bustle of Siam Center, I discovered a small, red bakery on the M floor. What caught my eye immediately was the staff constantly baking new batches through the glass through windows for the droves of people lining up for a taste. I knew this was something I couldn't pass up especially since it evoked childhood memories.

Hop Til You Drop

» Established by the folks behind the Craftpital bar at W District, Hoppy HRS lies just past the open-air food court between BTS Phra Khanong and Ekamai, on the even side of the road. Inspired from their trip to Chicago and their love for street food in the region (namely hot dogs), owners Sahachol "Micky" Chairat and Phatphitcha "Minnie" Suksangwarn decided to create a bar that could serve as a casual hangout spot where their friends can gather after work and enjoy locally crafted beer and sodas, as well as hot dogs. The small and cosy space gives customers a chance to relax on the couch near the DJ booth and sing their hearts out to 80s-90s alt rock. Anybody up for some karaoke to songs by Oasis?
