» Those who appreciate the world of art will find themselves busy in the next few days and weeks (and perhaps in many months time) as there are numerous art festivals and exhibitions around the Big Mango to pique your interest. Thailand is a melting pot of creativity and self-expression, with local and foreign talents displaying various works of arts from the use of simple objects to the more abstract. Without further ado, let's take a look at these creative exhibitions and highlight a few.

» The first Bangkok Art Biennale has finally hit the city, covering 20 locations and venues by more than 70 local and international artists from 33 countries around the world. There is a lot of art to be seen and admired by just what these talented creators have produced, giving those who are interested an incentive to explore the Big Mango. The event, which took off on Oct 19, will end on Feb 3, 2019.

Beyond the ropes

» In Bangkok's Charoen Krung area, tucked within an alley lies Maison Close, a dark bar/art gallery and home to some of the more uncommon tastes in art from abstract calligraphy to ero guro. However, as you enter the venue on some nights, art isn't the only focus but a blindfolded woman hung in suspension with ropes. The ropes have been tied up by a rope artist and her model serves as a canvas for elaborate and intricate patterns. Despite looking uncomfortable, the model, dubbed a rope bunny, is in a state of stillness and relaxation, with the ropes symmetrically wrapped around the curves of her body -- something beautiful or mesmerising. This is shibari or the art of Japanese rope bondage. Enter at your own risk.

Thailand in film

» It has been a few weeks since the rescue of the Wild Boar soccer team from Tham Luang cave. With the successful and miraculous feel-good news of the rescue, it was inevitable that plans to dramatise the entire ordeal will be made into a movie. Reportedly, six film production companies are in talks with the Thai government and have expressed interest in obtaining rights to make a dramatic movie version of the events.

LIFE

Hidden in plain sight

» There is no doubt Thailand's nightlife is booming with bars and drinks with unusual names and concoctions. And speaking of which, for every new bar that opens, there has to be a gimmick of some sort to attract bar patrons. Which brings us to this week's cover story for which we went around the city looking for bars with hard-to-spot entrances. After constantly getting lost and double checking Google Maps on our phones, we managed to list four hidden (well not-so-hidden now that we're writing about them) bars for the adventurous bar hoppers who would like to do a bit of effort in getting a drink. Half the fun is discovering them on your own so we included an elusive metre in terms of difficulty finding each tavern, as well as providing a few hints to help guide you on your way. Whether you have already discovered them (shush!) or in need of a change of setting and have a sense of exploration with friends, then Godspeed!

Parts unknown

» Named after the house number and the road where it is located, 100 Mahaseth serves North and Northeastern Thai cuisines with a modern twist. Those who frequent the Charoen Krung area or work in Sathon or Silom may have walked past 100 Mahaseth's metallic rust-coloured front with a warehouse-garage looking facade a few times, as the restaurant opened last September. Originally opened only for dinner, 100 Mahaseth has expanded their opening hours to include lunch. And for those who haven't dined here, prepare to have an unique dining experience -- nose-to-tail.
