Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 06/11/2020

» This year has been a total crapfest. We've gone through a soft lockdown and we're past it, but the pandemic continues and things are far from normal. Then there is the current state of affairs, which just piles on to the mounting stress. It's been a rough year and I can't help but remember that we all felt the same optimism when we wanted 2019 to end. Remember when we thought that year was bad? We've got two more months of 2020 and let's be real, we're not really sure what 2021 holds. Fortunately for you, I've done the hard work and listed a few viable options to let off steam. Whether it's by trashing a room or cuddling puppies, here are a few ways you can relieve the stress from the troubling times we're in.

» The new Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra is one of the sleekest phones the Korean manufacturer has ever produced, but don't be fooled. Hidden beneath its glossy sheen is a powerful smartphone that could possibly do away with the need of a tablet. Is this a good enough reason for you to spend your hard-earned cash on it? Read on.

A summer of fun

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 05/04/2019

» Summer is here -- like that's not at all obvious. As the heat bears down on all of us Bangkokians, the temptation to simply spend these hellish days locked up in our rooms with the AC turned high (or is it low? You get what I mean) while we cuddle in our blankets and binge hours and hours on end of Netflix shows is strong. But that doesn't have to be the case. There's still a bunch of enjoyable things to do around the city despite the heat. In fact, they're not only fun, but they're perfect things to during the summer time. So stop being a lazy bum, get off that couch and outta the house, and don't worry, you can still have your ice cream. Here's a few summer activities to get you up and going during this heatwave.

Lend a hand

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/03/2019

» In a world where everything seems bleak, we try our best to find some sort of escape. Whether or not this is simply denial of reality is something we won't delve into (we're Guru, we don't do existential crises). But with the stress of the real world and our quest to discover things that would temporary alleviate what we feel, we seldom ask the question, "What can I do to make the world a little better?." It may seem cliché but there are a number of little things you can do and it's not all about volunteering in a dense forests where you have to sleep in rickety tents with no toilets (shudder) all for the sake of saving Mother Earth. There are simple things like buying something online, adopting a doggo or even go shopping that can help a cause. This week, we've got some causes that you can get behind.

Modern love

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 08/02/2019

» It's almost that time of the year again when couples come out of their love nests in droves as they celebrate St Valentine's Day. This usually means that restaurants all over the city will be filled with couples celebrating the Day of Love (or Day of IDGAF -- depending on how you see it). This year, dare to be different. We at GURU are issuing you a challenge: do better. Well, it's not exactly a challenge since we're telling you what you can do, but if you want a different Valentine's Day experience then we've got you covered. (PS If you're not the risk-taker we think you are, turn a few pages to see our picks of where to eat on this day of love).

Fill 'em Up

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 11/01/2019

» The war on plastic has been waged in Thailand with plans to do away with single-use plastics by 2022 and single-use plastic bottles and straws by 2025. It's been a long time coming and is a little way away, but we're hoping this change sticks. A few days ago, I bought stuff from a Tesco Lotus Express and they used a paper bag -- change is afoot, people. Instead of being cynical and wondering why they couldn't ban plastic sooner, we can choose to be part of the solution now. The concept of refill stations or refilleries is growing in Europe and North America. It's basically a grocery store where you take your own containers to fill them up, which drastically lowers plastic waste. Think of all the plastic you throw away after using detergents and soaps. Fortunately, a number of refill stations have also been popping up around the Kingdom, providing us an opportunity to cut plastic use. Even better, these places are spread out all over Bangkok and two are in Chiang Mai so there's no excuse not to avail of their environmental-friendly services. Get your containers ready -- Guru's about to get eco-friendly up in here.

Cool off

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 26/10/2018

» The rainy season is drawing to a close but in pure Bangkok fashion, that doesn't necessarily mean there's an absence of blistering heat. Though the rain gives us a reprieve, you may still want something to cool you off other than seeking refuge in an air-conditioned mall or 7-Elven. Enter Wán, bringing you a sweet and refreshing treat so you can chill from the Bangkok sun. Literally.

Must love dogs

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 19/10/2018

» The Bodhi Dog Rescue and Shelter in Phuket has been rescuing and treating dogs (and other animals, too) who have been mistreated, shunned and abandoned for six years. Running solely on donations, they've encountered heartbreaking circumstances, which makes us question if we really do treat dogs as "man's best friend". On the other hand, they've also had successful stories like that of a pup named Nor. On their sixth anniversary of Bodhi Dog Rescue and Shelter GURU caught up with Tina Maria, founder and owner.

LIFE

Sweet & savoury

» The curiously named Café Thieves and Bar may be a name you've seen around Siam Paragon and in Lat Phrao. Their two locations only serve froyo, but their recently-opened location on Ekkamai 12 has a menu with good variety. Add the fact that the aesthetics of the place is pretty rad and you've got yourself your next IG/hangout destination.

» Themed cafes are the latest craze popping all over the Big Mango and what's not to be crazy about? After all, would you rather sit in a quaint little cafe or would your rather be in a place with walls adorned with bright coloured-rainbows in a unicorn onesie, or wearing a mermaid fin while you feast on a rainbow cake and slurp on a rainbow slushie? OK, to each their own, I guess. But if you're one of the latter and want a more heightened cafe experience then you've come to the right place or should I say you're reading the right piece. Here are seven themed cafes to indulge yourself in Bangkok.
