» As the holiday season ramps up, parts of Thailand are transforming into centres of celebration for Christmas and New Year. More accurately, there will be more IG-worthy places for a limited period of time. Malls have set up Christmas trees while a number of light installations around the country are set to give visitors a little light in the otherwise dark and difficult period we've all been through these past couple of months. » When young Fei Fei discovers that her dad has fallen in love with someone new, she surmises that he's probably forgotten about her late mother. To remind him, she sets on a mission to prove that the goddess Chang'e, who her mother constantly told stories about when she was a kid, is real. To do that, she has to go where the goddess lives: the moon. Netflix's new animated film is filled with songs, an emotional story, a stellar Asian cast and is a wonderful representation of Chinese culture. Guru spoke to the film's director, Glen Keane, a Disney legend who has worked as an animator for several classic Disney films, as well as the film's stars: Cathy Ang who plays Fei Fei and Phillipa Soo who plays Chang'e, to talk about the movie.

» Pop art has started to pop (wink wink) up a lot in the Big Mango, from curious structures at well-known malls to colourful, eclectic murals on faded walls. It wasn't a surprise then when SO Sofitel Bangkok welcomed pop/street artist Jisbar to showcase his vibrant pieces until Mar 13. The Paris-based artist has showcased his talent on canvases and other items like a bike (a design in collaboration with BMW and showcased at the exhibition) and even Cardi B's handbags. He's chosen Bangkok to be his first foray into Asia so Guru sat down and talked with him about his art and what drew him to Bangkok.

» If you have felt the crisp, cool Bangkok mornings, then you're probably aware that the cool season is about to kick-off. While we may not have four seasons in Thailand, we definitely have camping season. The slightly lowered temperatures means this is the perfect time to spend a few days in the mountains surrounded by nature instead of skyscrapers. The word "camping" may give rise to a few assumptions -- roughing it out in the wild, having to rely on your wits and limited resources, being out in the open with the possibility of dangerous animals lurking about, sleeping in a tiny cramped tent, and worse of all, having to go to the "toilet" in a hole in the ground. But it's 2018 and there ways to go camping without having to suffer such discomfort.

» Us living in Bangkok may be accustomed to complaining about the various things we experience on a daily basis, whether it be heavy traffic, the absence of law-abiding drivers, taxi rejections or the crowded streets and trains. And while these grumblings are founded and you have the right to complain (because we do too), there are things that we should be proud of in the Big Mango and Thailand. As evidenced by this list, plenty of accolades have been lavished to Bangkok or Thailand, and sometimes we have to put aside our jadedness to realise that we're living in a pretty great place. Just recently, Bangkok was named one of the top destinations in the world by Mastercard and was also named "the least unhappy country" by the Bloomberg Misery Index. So this week, we've done what we thought was impossible: we're putting aside the snarkiness and sarcasm -- OK, maybe we're just lessening it a tad -- and listing the awards that have been bestowed upon Thailand. This is just so we learn to do what Eric Idle from Monty Python has been singing all these years: Always look on the bright side of life. That's wishful thinking though, we'll probably be back to our usual sarcastic selves in the next issue.
