» We are a few weeks into 2022 and I suspect many of us are still trying to grapple with the events of 2021. Heck, some of us may still be dealing with 2020! Time, however, waits for no one. We’re almost to the halfway mark of January (gasp) so we need to prepare ourselves for the rest of the months to come and if you don’t know where to start, Guru has you covered. From fun games that chillax you to getting the living daylights scared out of you to apps that could help your productivity, your health and even your love life, here are a few things to help you get on track.

Nippon express

» Thailand has reopened its borders to foreigners and the prospect of travelling abroad seems to be more of a reality now than it did a few months ago. It's not entirely back to normal though. There are hurdles to go through and it costs a lot of money if you want to go abroad and return to Thailand. That being said, unless you're unlike many of us and showed great self-control when it came to spending on food deliveries during lockdown, you've probably saved a fair bit to travel. A recent Visa survey revealed that the number one place Thais want to visit is Japan and if you can't get yourself there, Guru has the next best thing -- places in the Land of Smiles that transport you to the Land of the Rising Sun.

» Cinemas are back! After another semi-lockdown that forced cinemas to close, we can finally enjoy a proper movie-going experience again. Sure, it might be capped at 50% capacity and you can only sit with one person beside you instead of the classic cinema experience of having your girlfriend on your left while a dude who munches popcorn loudly is on your right. Sigh, nostalgia! But we'll take what we can get for now. Though it's easy to simply go to the nearest mall to go to the cinema, we're spotlighting places that offer a different experience. These indie cinemas deserve as much love as any of the multiplexes do. After losing iconic places like Scala and Bangkok Screening Room, we should do what we can to keep these cinemas alive. Get the popcorn and settle in. It's time to go back to the movies.

Art against authority

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 16/07/2021

» We can all agree on one thing: this whole pandemic is a crapfest. The time when Thailand was lauded for successfully handling the first wave has long gone and we are in the throes of the third wave with daily cases almost hitting 10,000 (at least in the time of going to print), hospitals running out of beds for patients and vaccinations going at a snail's pace. The anger and fury directed at the government's handling of the third wave has reached boiling point and none are more vocal about it than political artists, who have found a home, voice and audience on Facebook. From tarot cards to 3D renders, here are a few artists who use their art to make their voices heard.

Get creamed

» Fluffy, light and not overly sweet pastries have been in high demand lately, and isn't that the way pastries are meant to be anyway? It isn't really enjoyable when you bite something and you immediately feel the sugar coursing through your veins or you chomp off a huge amount of bread that isn't at all tasty or well-baked. When done right, these pastries can be dangerously addictive, so it's only proper that I warn you about Cream, because what they're offering is something you'll want to devour over and over and over again.

Cold relief

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 26/03/2021

» T he sun has started to bear down a little more heavily these days. Brief walks to the 7-Eleven are starting to result in sweaty shirts. The cool, billowing breeze from an AC turned down to 10C degrees is starting to feel a little more pleasant than before. Brace yourselves: the onset of summer is here. What better way to alleviate the summer heat than perhaps a cool, refreshing dessert? Okay, ice cream is great no matter what season (I'd eat it even if it was winter. Then again, Bangkok doesn't really have "winter"). But you know what's better than delectable ice cream during the ridiculously hot Bangkok summer? Delectable ice cream that's delivered right to your doorstep during the ridiculously hot Bangkok summer! Here are some cool ice cream places you can order from to give you some sweet, delicious summer relief.

Doughnuts high

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 05/03/2021

» While doughnuts aren't rare in Bangkok, they can be hit-or-miss. Some might be too sweet that even one doughnut puts you in a sugar coma while others are just laden with artificial flavouring. You sometimes also get doughnuts made with unsatisfying dough. However, Drop By Dough dashes all of those to bits and entices customers to enter their quaint Scandinavian-designed shop, settle in and dig into what perhaps is one of the best doughnuts in the city.

Guru awards 2020

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 18/12/2020

» A lot has happened in 2020. From the pandemic to protests, the year has had a flurry of events, good and bad (perhaps mostly bad). Paradoxically, it seems that 2020 lasted longer than it should and we all can't wait for it to be over, but at the same time it also seemed like we just went into quarantine yesterday. We're all looking forward to the year that's ahead and leave 2020 behind, but before we do, let's take a look at the year that's been and determine which blunders, skills and mascots are worthy of recognition.

Winter wonderlands

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 20/11/2020

» If you haven't noticed, there's only a little over a month left for 2020 to end. This also means cooler weather all over the country and along with that comes a slew of festivals making good use of the cool breeze that makes walking outside more delightful and less of a workout. A number of these events take place outside the city, which means even cooler temperatures and breezes accompanied by fantastic views of nature. These events are a great way to enjoy the "winter season" and serve as a reminder that we've made it through 2020 so we've all earned ourselves a bit of time to enjoy what these festivals have to offer.

Vegan comfort

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 28/08/2020

» T hough vegan restaurants aren't difficult to find in Bangkok, finding delicious and a good variety of vegan food is difficult. Thankfully, Bangkok City Diner has jumped into the fray. Leave all assumptions about veganism at the door. They will be obliterated.
