» Chinese-American takeaway probably evokes either memories or curiosity: memories for those who travelled or lived in the US and discovered American-Chinese takeaway as a delicious and affordable option; curiosity for those who have never set foot in the US but have seen those signature white boxes in films or TV shows.

» Thailand is known as "The Land Of Smiles" because everyone here is happy and joyful all the time... right? As true as that is, there are certain things you can do here that can turn that smile upside down.

» The time has come: people are getting out of their houses because places are starting to reopen. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? It depends on how you look at it. It's great that the butt indent on our couches is getting a relief, but then again, people overcrowding places like Ikea is the downside. They probably all rushed there to replace their sofas. Nevertheless, a number of places have reopened, which means you have stuff to do and places to see other than going to the supermarket for groceries. If you've been dying to get out of the house, these places offer a respite.

» Coronavirus -- you've been hearing about it, reading about it, but knock on wood you haven't been infected by it. The world has been sent reeling these past few months because of the virus. Everyone is in a state of panic. Masks are in short supply, sneezing in public places garners dirty looks and everyone is convinced they're living in Raccoon City and the Umbrella Corporation is behind it all (get the Resident Evil reference?). But let's all chill for a sec, which may be difficult to do given the circumstances, but we need to get our facts straight which, apparently, is hard for the Thai Ministry of Public Health to do. Let's talk about Covid-19 and how it affects us in Thailand.

» The first day of 2020 saw a major change in the lives of those who live in the Kingdom of Thailand: the (almost total) disappearance of single-use plastic bags. It's a huge change but a seemingly necessary one. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, Thailand is one of the four countries responsible for half of all plastic in the oceans in Southeast Asia. While 2019 saw a drastic drop in the use of plastic bag, the plan is to eliminate 225,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. Single-use plastic bags are just the beginning though as bottle caps, cups and straws are next on the list. So what exactly are people saying about the ban? Is it absolutely necessary? What does it mean for customers who go grocery shopping? Are there ways to help lessen plastic waste? Hopefully, this clarifies some things and answers some of your questions.

» Messy hair, baggy shirts and a 90s vibe all around, Daniel Didyasarin seems like your typical half-Thai, half-American schoolboy with vintage tendencies. You might pass him on the sidewalk without a second thought, but this fresh-faced young man is a promising artist on the rise in Thailand's music scene. Daniel is a member of the bands Penny Time and City Plant, but since those two bands are currently on a break (hopefully not the Ross and Rachel kind), he's kept busy and released his first solo album Bedroom, not to mention a couple of EPs and singles, as well. You get the chance to hear him live on Sept 22 at Siri House. Guru sat down and talked to the burgeoning young artist.

» In a world that's filled with super-serumed worthy captains, broody billionaires in batsuits (either with or sans nipples) and "love you 3000s", it's obvious that it's the golden age of superheroes. Now a normal everyday part of pop culture, these characters and worlds are no longer just the talk of nerds and geeks in the closed enclaves of comic book stores, evidenced by the fact that the highest grossing film of all time is now a superhero film. It's in this superhero-saturated time that the card game Too Many Heroes will be introduced. Ironically, the game deals with a universe wherein there are... well, too many heroes and there are certain effects to society because of their presence. The game's three creators — Carol Blackmon, Sacha P. Nathan and Sunny Sachdev — have worked together to make the game's universe, which is an alternate reality to our own, as detailed as can be. Guru talked to Blackmon, the game's art director and Nathan, the game's writer, about Too Many Heroes.

» Mexican cuisine isn't new to Bangkok. It's pretty accessible and there are a number of different restos to choose from so it's not exactly something you have to search for. Bowlito sits comfortably in the middle of the cheap Mexican fast food eats and the expensive ones.

» Songkran may be over but if you're like me, you'd be suffering from a severe case of holiday hangover. As much as we'd all like to remain in limbo with no work or responsibilities to worry about, we all have to face reality and get back to our usual routines. But that doesn't mean we have to jump into being all hectic again. It's good to carve out some "me time" or time with a few friends to relax and chill, even it's for just a few hours and not the three days we were so generously given over Songkran. With good company, it's time to let your hair down for another new year (see what we did there?), have a good brunch while reading a book, chat over a few drinks or maybe go on a food and shopping trip. We've got a few new places that you'll want to check out.
