The 2021 Guru awards

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 24/12/2021

» As the year comes to a close and we're all looking back at the past 12 months with introspection, at Guru we will stick to time-honoured tradition of being reflectively snarky. Like any other year, 2021 had no shortage of cringe-worthy and WTF moments. So before we head into the new year with resolutions we'll give up on halfway through the first month of 2022, let's roll out the metaphorical red carpet as we award moments from the eventful year. It's time for this year's edition of the Guru Awards.

Camping cosmos

» T  hailand has officially entered the cold season -- well, at least it's cold for those of us who live in the Kingdom. According to the Thai Meteorological Department, the "winter" (quotations as Thai "winter" isn't really winter at all) began on Nov 2 with the coldest days occurring in the latter half of December all the way until the end of January. For city-dwellers, it's predicted that we'll be enjoying the "extreme" minimum temperatures of around 15C to 16C, though we'll believe it when we feel it. However, the cold season signals the perfect time to take a camping trip especially up North where temperatures are expected to go as low as 6C or 7C. Brrrh. So unearth those fur coats and start buying camping gear for a cool road trip. Pun intended. It's time to go camping and Guru's got spots picked out for you.

Couch surfing

» Most of us dream of walking down the aisle -- the airplane one -- and the awkwardness that comes with trying to find your seat while avoiding people putting their bags in the overhead bins.

Speedy, not pricey

» Buying a phone on a budget usually means having to set your expectations low. After all, you can't expect to get the same features as the latest high-end release on a mid-tier phone. Though the new Samsung Galaxy A52 doesn't match the superior quality of its S Series siblings, which is a given, it still gives you more value for your buck than you would imagine.

Read all about it

» A blogger a number of years ago cited an alleged Unesco statistic stating that Thais only read eight lines per year compared to the five books a year Singaporeans and Vietnamese read. I couldn't find the statistic anywhere but a former editor for Guru also wrote in one of her past editor's note that the National Statistic Office reported in 2005 that Thais read an average of just seven lines a year. However, the Unesco site which you can check out has traced that illiteracy has begun declining in 2015 so perhaps the seven-lines-per-year has improved. But why in the world am I talking about Thailand's literacy rates when we usually talk about food or Uncle Tu's latest blunders in this magazine? Well, today is actually World Book Day, and we're listing out a few things you can do to celebrate the occasion -- and perhaps also keep that upward trajectory on the Unesco stat going. So choose a cozy spot and get ready to bury your nose in a few pages as we celebrate World Book Day 2021.

» A war-ravaged kingdom on the brink of falling apart is the setting for Netflix's upcoming series, Shadow And Bone. Adapted from a series of books that have been dubbed as "The Grishaverse" written by Leigh Bardugo, the series centres around a young woman named Alina Starkov, who discovers she has powers, making her part of an elite group of people known as the Grisha.

The year ahead

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 01/01/2021

» 2021 is finally here and we can finally put "The Year That Must Not Be Named" behind us! Though we're not entirely out of the woods yet, the fact remains that a new year means we can turn a new leaf and look forward to the things yet to come this year. Here is a list of things that are in store for us, which hopefully -- fingers crossed -- may actually take place this year.

Budget getaway

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 25/09/2020

» Luxurious resorts with magnificent suites, top-class amenities and great restaurants definitely result in a great vacation/getaway. The thing is, it comes with a price, and the price can be a little bit steep. It can be challenging to find a place you can stay to relax and unwind and not hurt your wallet too much, but if a budget getaway is what you're after that caters to the enjoyment of kids and adults, Centra by Centara Cha-Am Beach Resort Hua Hin is a great option that's not too far nor too expensive.

Streamer starter kit

» Ten years ago, the concept of making money off playing video games was laughable. Imagine, you could actually make a living playing something because other people would actually pay to watch you play (did you mean "sports"?).

LIFE

Warrior without honour

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 31/07/2020

» There's no scarcity of hack-and-slash games around nor are stealth games lacking in the current video game landscape. The way these games work are formulaic, from the likes of button-mashing games like God Of War or something like the current iterations of Assassin's Creed that have reworked the combat system but still had that iconic stealth gameplay. Ghost Of Tsushima definitely borrows and relies on these formulas, but the result isn't another generic sword-fighting, open-world, sneak-around game. Instead, what we get is quite possibly the first Akira Kurosawa-like video game we've all been waiting for.
