New words I probably won't be using

Roger Crutchley, Published on 31/08/2025

» The Cambridge Dictionary recently announced the inclusion of 6,000 new words mainly derived from their common usage in social media. I fear those words will simply be added to an already lengthy list of vocabulary I am totally unfamiliar with. As one observer noted "internet culture is changing the English language."

Thailand's most unlikely A-list celebrity

Oped, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/09/2024

» Unless you have been in hibernation for the past few weeks you may have noticed that making the news has been the two-month-old female pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng (Bouncy Pork) which has been attracting large crowds to Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri. The little hippo, which acquired its name due to its "bouncy" behaviour has become an internet celebrity and indeed, an international star. She even made a guest appearance on the BBC World news.

The man in the 'rather uncomfy' mask

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 03/05/2020

» Despite diligently wearing a face mask on rare excursions out of the house, I admit to not particularly enjoying the experience, finding the masks quite stifling. Admittedly that's a small sacrifice if it keeps me and others healthy. I certainly wouldn't make a good masked bandit. It's probably the long farang nose that's the problem. I don't envy the many people who have to wear a mask all day, especially in the tropical heat.

The Early Bird has made his last flight

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 08/03/2020

» Over the years there have been many talented foreigners who made Thailand their home. One such person was Australian Jim Davison who pioneered English language radio broadcasting after arriving in 1966 and continued for five decades. I am sad to report Davison passed away in Australia recently at the grand age of 104.

Creatures great and small, bless them all

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/09/2018

» At the end of this month Dusit Zoo, better known as Khao Din, is shutting its gates after 80 years. Its 1,300 residents are moving to temporary accommodation in six provincial zoos until their new home opens in Pathum Thani in another three years. Moving can be quite a traumatic experience for animals, and we wish them all well.

Today's news may be faker than usual

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/04/2018

» We have had to put up with a lot of fake news in recent times, and if you think you have read more than your fair share of strange stories today, it might be an idea to look at the date.
