OPINION

A good time of the year to chill out

Roger Crutchley, Published on 21/12/2025

» Normally at this stage of the calendar PostScript attempts a festive flavour, welcoming in the season of silly hats and hangovers, but this year it's a real struggle to find something to be festive about. At least the weather has cooperated, the lower temperatures giving us more of a wintry feeling. In that respect it is the most pleasant time of the year.

OPINION

Season's bleatings and other nonsense

Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/12/2024

» It looks like we are in the thick of the silly season again, otherwise known as "Jinger Ben" time (Jingle Bells to the uninitiated). Considering all the depressing news this year the festive season is actually something of a welcome break. So we might as well make the most of it especially as the coming 12 months are not likely to be a bundle of laughs.

OPINION

It's feeling a bit on the warm side

Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/04/2024

» It was Oscar Wilde who observed that "conversation about the weather is the last refuge of the unimaginative". He might have had a point but it means there are a lot of unimaginative people in Thailand at present. I can hardly recall a conversation lately without a reference to the heat. It has definitely been "a bit on the warm side".

OPINION

Seducing shoppers with special offers

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 27/02/2022

» In many Bangkok retail establishments there are frequent special offers with variations on the "buy one, get one free!" theme. It is known in the trade as BOGO or BOGOF which actually sounds a bit rude. The immediate reaction to this sort of offer, especially when the word "free!" appears with an accompanying exclamation mark, tends to be "what's the catch?"

OPINION

Back in the cinema again with 007

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/10/2021

» Just got back from watching No Time to Die, Daniel Craig's fifth and final appearance as James Bond and the 25th film in the franchise. It was quite a decent send-off for Craig and entertaining enough to sit back and enjoy my first visit to a cinema in a couple of years.

OPINION

Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 20/12/2020

» In the mid-1970s, while travelling on the slowest train in the world from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, I recall reading a substantial chunk of John Le Carre's espionage novel, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Though not a fast-paced book, it still had more momentum than the wretched train.

OPINION

Well, it's only a slogan after all

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/05/2020

» The Tourism Authority of Thailand has decreed that the "Amazing Thailand" slogan will need rebranding once the coronavirus situation is sorted out. So from October, we will be treated to "Amazing Trusted Thailand", emphasising safety and aimed at "high-end" tourists. Well-intentioned as it may be, this new slogan doesn't exactly roll off the tongue and the middle word may prompt a few wry smiles.

OPINION

Always look on the bright side of life

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/01/2020

» We have just scraped through the Year of the Porkers and are hurtling into the Year of the Rat, which admittedly doesn't sound too promising.

OPINION

Season of silly hats and hangovers

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/12/2019

» The festive season -- otherwise known in Thailand as "Jinger Ben" time -- is well upon us, not that there is too much to get festive about.

OPINION

The Cisco Kid was a friend of mine

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 03/11/2019

» Every now and again in Bangkok something triggers memories of childhood days in England. Not far from my current residence a condominium is going up called the Glendale, which was the name of my local cinema back home in Reading.
