» I've just got back from filing my income tax and must thank the staff at the branch of the Revenue Department for their helpfulness and efficiency. It must be a thankless job knowing that nearly everyone they deal with would probably rather be somewhere else.

» I am probably not alone in being a little surprised by the speed at which Thai authorities have performed a remarkable U-turn in their attitude to what is referred to variously as cannabis, marijuana, grass or, as it is most commonly known in Thailand, ganja. It wasn't long ago that the merest whiff of the weed would result in people being hauled off to the slammer.

» I nipped into the local supermarket last Tuesday to see if it was abiding by the promise not to use plastic bags in celebration of Thai Green Day. I was pleasantly surprised that the usual sea of plastic bags were not decorating the checkout counters. There was also a notice encouraging customers to use their own bags.

» The gentleman in the White House has run into self-inflicted flak over his indelicate use of the word "horseface" in describing the adult film actress he may or may not have dangled with. However, she came storming back with a tweet of her own, referring to him as "Tiny", which one suspects was not a compliment. These exchanges could become quite entertaining.

» It was with slightly mixed feelings that I read the Bangkok Post will celebrate its 72nd anniversary on Wednesday - Aug 1. Any newspaper that has lasted that long and in the process survived approximately 15 coups or attempted coups and assorted other upheavals, deserves a pat on the back.

» It was nearly four years ago the powers that be announced the "Return Happiness to the Public" campaign and since then we have all been insanely happy, like it or not. So last week's news that Thailand has been named the "least miserable country in the world" for the fourth successive year by the Bloomberg Misery Index, hardly raised an eyebrow. However, there was some debate if there is any subtle difference between "most happy" and "least miserable".
