» Every day of the year has its own niche in history and March 1 is no exception. On this day 152 years ago the first typewriters went on sale in the US. It was 1874 and the Sholes and Glidden typewriter, invented in Milwaukee, was proudly presented by Remington & Sons in New York.

» There was a story from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last week concerning English actress Georgie Grier whose one-woman show Sunsets attracted a grand audience of one. A tweet with pictures of a tearful Grier after the show prompted considerable sympathy and the following night she found herself performing to a near full-house which she joked felt the equivalent of "Wembley".

» There was an encouraging story from Jakarta this week about a former tuk-tuk driver who has converted his vehicle into a mobile library. Sutino Hadi now spends his days driving to the poorer areas of Indonesia's capital where he is greeted by enthusiastic kids eager to get their hands on his collection of children's books. It's proven to be highly popular and apparently there are similar mobile libraries throughout the country.

» I nearly ended up in "The Great Newspaper in the Sky" recently when a thundering truck ignored the red lights at a Klong Toey junction and missed our taxi by a whisker. The taxi driver seemed to think the incident was amusing, while all I managed was to blurt out "bloody hell!"
