» Recently I watched on television the 1992 film Chaplin, starring Robert Downey Jr as the great English comic actor, best known in Thailand simply as Charlie. It brought back happy memories of the mid-1970s when a series of the Chaplin movies were re-released in Thailand and proved a huge hit. The Thai public loved Charlie.

» With the kingdom opening up again the Tourist Authority of Thailand have announced that they are primarily interested in "quality tourists". What exactly constitutes a quality tourist is not entirely clear, but one suspects it's a polite way of saying anyone with lots of money. No riff-raff or hoi polloi please.

» Despite not being American I attended several July 4 celebrations in Bangkok back in the days when they were held at the old ISB campus on Sukhumvit Soi 15. A colleague's recommendation of "cheap beer and heavenly hot dogs" was enough to convince me it was possibly not the worst way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Bangkok.

» For the second year running Thailand was ranked 54th in the UN-sponsored World Happiness Report which covers 149 countries. It seems that although we have not quite descended into the depths of Les Miserables, Thai people are not exactly dancing in the streets with joy either. However, considering the Covid situation, one suspects there's not one country in the world that is particularly happy.

» A couple of months ago PostScript carried an item about the late English comedian Richard Hearne, known as Mr Pastry, and how his walrus moustache gave him an uncanny resemblance to current White House national security adviser, John Bolton. I watched Mr Bolton giving a speech on TV this week and have to admit I could not shake off the image of the bumbling Mr Pastry. Despite reports that Mr Bolton's boss is not a huge fan of the moustache, Mr Bolton is said to be very proud of his distinctive bristle.

» Just as most Brits must be sick to death of ever hearing the word Brexit, across the Pond one suspects the majority of Americans have also had more than their fill of The Wall. You can't escape those dreaded words even here in Thailand. Switch on the satellite news and you will be bombarded by the two topics, analysed by every expert in the world, most of whom happen to have just written a book on the subject.

» It was with slightly mixed feelings that I read the Bangkok Post will celebrate its 72nd anniversary on Wednesday - Aug 1. Any newspaper that has lasted that long and in the process survived approximately 15 coups or attempted coups and assorted other upheavals, deserves a pat on the back.
