On top of the world in Kathmandu

Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/09/2025

» I was sorry to read about the unrest in Kathmandu this week. As a kid in the UK during the 1950s I used to daydream about far away places with strange-sounding names. One of those places was Kathmandu.

Probably the saga to end all sagas

Roger Crutchley, Published on 08/06/2025

» The latest nationwide crackdown on motorcyclists not wearing crash helmets kicked off on June 1. Whether it will prove more effective than countless previous campaigns remains to be seen. But don't hold your breath.

It was not exactly life in the fast lane

Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/11/2024

» It appears the bicycle lane launch on Sukhumvit 39 last Tuesday didn't get off to the most auspicious of starts. In fact it had to be hastily abandoned after one day. All it succeeded in doing was to create a massive traffic jam leading to gridlock on 17 major roads along with a communal sigh across the city.

Poster boys and girls near final straight

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 30/04/2023

» Try as you might you just cannot escape the forthcoming election with all those posters dangling from lampposts and the few remaining trees. Street parties? There must be a jubilee

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/06/2022

» The fact that this weekend 1,775 street parties are being held in the UK reflects just how much the British public respect Queen Elizabeth as she celebrates her Platinum Jubilee, marking the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne. The stamina of the 96-year-old monarch is quite remarkable.

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 27/02/2022

» In many Bangkok retail establishments there are frequent special offers with variations on the "buy one, get one free!" theme. It is known in the trade as BOGO or BOGOF which actually sounds a bit rude. The immediate reaction to this sort of offer, especially when the word "free!" appears with an accompanying exclamation mark, tends to be "what's the catch?"

OPINION

Boris battling Binface and Buckethead

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 08/12/2019

» It is hard to get too excited by this week's UK election as it seems to have come down to a question of who is the least unpopular. This is not as simple as it sounds because they are all unpopular, so it could turn into quite an entertaining scrap.

OPINION

Rescue effort gripped the world

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 08/07/2018

» It is hard to imagine what went through the trapped teenagers' minds when two British divers suddenly emerged from the murky depths of Tham Luang cave on Monday night. They were the first people the kids had seen in nine dark days. But that first exchange told everyone what they wanted to hear. "How many of you? Thirteen? Brilliant!'' They had not lost anyone, and it was indeed brilliant news.
