» Last Sunday marked a sombre day for manga enthusiasts as news spread of the passing of Japanese icon Akira Toriyama (1955-2024). An official statement from his company, Bird Studio, said that the creator of Dragon Ball had passed away on March 1 at the age of 68 due to a sudden and tragic blood clot in the brain. Toriyama's demise came as a shock to many given his active involvement in numerous creative projects and his evident enthusiasm for his craft.

» I was first introduced to Jordan Peele in his directorial debut Get Out in 2017. As soon as it came out, the film was an instant favourite and considered a trendsetter in the thriller, horror and dark comedy genre not because of its cinematography, suspenseful storyline or giving newcomers like Daniel Kaluuya a big break, but for being thought-provoking and weaving trenchant social critiques into an effective film. Despite being produced by horror studio Blumhouse, the film had the vibe of an A24 release instead.

» Despite its popularity and cult status, the slasher genre is perhaps the most formulaic of them all. Since the genre's peak in the mid 70s and until today, each slasher movie has stayed true to its original format, without much change in the presentation. Most of these movies usually involves a group of young people on a trip, perhaps to a cabin in the woods, and a serial killer with crazy choices of weapons. There's a lot of screaming and running around and characters making poor decisions that lead to their tragic death.
