» When we first arrived on the quiet island of Koh Mak in Trat province, I expected turquoise waters, swaying palms and maybe a snorkelling excursion.

Descent into darkness

» Hooligan rage, racism, bigotry and gangsterism are hardly confined to one nation -- they are grim realities of modern society across the globe. In recent years, Western cultures in particular have wrestled with the visible resurgence of extremist ideologies and rising fascist sentiments.

Unravelling family secrets

» The Better Sister is the kind of show that proves that even with a stellar cast, a gripping premise and polished production, there's no guarantee it will deliver a consistently entertaining experience. That isn't to say the latest Prime Video mystery thriller is a bad series -- far from it -- but it struggles to stand out in a genre already saturated with stronger contenders. We've probably seen a dozen shows that handled similar material with more finesse and momentum.

» On Dec 26, 1996, John and Patsy Ramsey woke up after a joyful family Christmas to discover their youngest child, six-year-old JonBenét, missing. A chilling ransom note had been left downstairs. Later that day, John Ramsey discovered his daughter's body in the basement, exposing the horrific truth -- JonBenét had not been kidnapped but was sexually assaulted and brutally murdered in her own home.

A musical misfire

» Despite the controversies surrounding Joker (2019) upon release, I found many things to admire about the film. Whether it was the ambitious storytelling, the refreshing take on an iconic DC character, or the homage it paid to Martin Scorsese's classics like Taxi Driver (1976) and The King Of Comedy (1982), there was a lot to appreciate. However, when I heard they were making a sequel to what was supposed to be a standalone film, I had a bad feeling. Now that I've seen Joker: Folie À Deux, I can't say my opinion has changed.

Often referred to as America's version of James Bond, Jack Ryan is based on characters from the fictional "Ryanverse" political drama created by author Tom Clancy. The man is a CIA analyst and multitalented individual who's always saving the day. Season 3 also sees the return of John Krasinski as Jack Ryan, a role once played by a number of famous actors such as Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine, with Krasinski being the fifth to do so.

The Neilson Hays Library recently hosted "101 Years Strong" with a rich variety of programmes and activities, from a storytime special, a lecture on the building's design innovations, readings with famous authors, a courtyard concert, to an ongoing installation exhibition. Yet the library promises more fun events and activities that will be held all through the year.

LIFE

The Privilege suffers from the sum of its parts

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 18/02/2022

» German Netflix original The Privilege (Das Privileg) is another example of a horror-type film that could not make up its mind on what it wants to be. Even though the film seems to have an interesting concept with many obvious influences in its style, The Privilege feels like a confusing mix of sci-fi and supernatural with some mystery and even sexy teen romantic genre thrown into the mix.

Final days of the fab four

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 26/11/2021

» On April 10, 1970, English musician Paul McCartney shocked the world when he announced that The Beatles were no more. And when the world's most influential rock band breaks up, people want to know why, but no one could say for sure. Since the internet did not exist at that time, the only source people could rely on was media -- newspapers and tabloid magazines.
