Prime Video drama presents mother versus girlfriend showdown

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 19/09/2025

» The story of a mother-in-law clashing with her son's partner -- and the hapless son stuck in the middle -- feels universal. It's a tale many people can recognise, either from personal experience or from watching families around them unravel in similar ways. Prime Video seems particularly fond of this theme lately, frequently pushing dramas about dysfunctional families. This year alone, they've released titles like Better Sister and We Were Liars. Whether or not you'll enjoy their latest entry, The Girlfriend, depends largely on how much patience you have for this type of conflict-driven domestic drama.

Girls gone bad

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 18/07/2025

» Remember the popular HBO series Girls from over a decade ago? The show was widely recognised for its postfeminist commentary on female sexuality and millennial angst and it ran for a surprisingly long six seasons. To this day, I still don't really understand the rave reviews. I only watched a few episodes here and there, so I won't pretend to be an expert on it, but what I saw never quite resonated with me.

» On a balmy Bangkok evening, the red carpet at Iconsiam shimmered with excitement as the main cast of Good Boy -- Park Bo-gum, Kim So-hyun and Lee Sang-yi -- stepped out to greet a global press corps and legions of screaming fans. The energy was palpable, both in the room and on screen. The South Korean action-comedy series had just premiered that day (May 31) on JTBC in Korea, with international audiences tuning in on Prime Video. New episodes are available every Saturday and Sunday, with episodes five and six streaming this past weekend.

A brutal look at the Wild West

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 17/01/2025

» If you're diving into Netflix's latest Western miniseries, American Primeval, you might find yourself reminded of the 2015 Leonardo DiCaprio film The Revenant. Well, guess what? You wouldn't be wrong. The two share striking similarities and it's not just because American Primeval was penned by the same screenwriter, Mark L. Smith. Both narratives explore survival, hardship, and the relentless pursuit of a goal -- all set against the backdrop of a brutal and unforgiving era. They're dark, gritty tales where protagonists endure unimaginable dangers, reflecting the raw violence of the Western frontier.

» When Dev Patel, a British actor known for compelling performances in films like Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and The Green Knight (2021) stepped into the director's chair for the first time with Monkey Man, he envisioned a neo-noir action thriller set in a fictional Indian city.

Metalheads make a comeback

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 15/04/2022

» When they say rock never dies, it's probably because rock music is associated with youth and teenagers. The loud, heavy guitar riffs, intense drum sounds and emotional vocals resonate with adolescents fuelled by hormones, rebelliousness and teen angst. The same goes within the world of cinema, where we see the combination of rock music and teen movies pop up every five or 10 years to appeal to the young generation, from Rock'n'Roll High School (1979), This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Detroit Rock City (1999) and School Of Rock (2003), to name a few.

Finding Mr Right

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 31/07/2020

» Just like most people, you'll likely have seven different relationships on average during your adult life before you find the person you end up staying with or the one that is your soulmate. This is the narration from the opening scene of Love Life, a new original romantic comedy/drama series starring Anna Kendrick, which is now streaming on HBO GO. Surprisingly, the show is fun with beautiful shots of New York City. While the series has been marketed as a rom-com, the comedy element is not over the top. Thankfully, there's a down to earth approach to the drama as well.
