Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 20/10/2025

» From original Mafia spouse to the romcom heroine and early 20th-century feminist author to late-20th-century modern woman navigating both the tumultuous Me Decade and the you-can-have-it-all 1980s -- these roles may have been memorable in the hands of many actors, however, Diane Keaton made them iconic.

Turn on, tune out

» There's nothing remotely original about the plot of Netflix's new romantic comedy French Lover. A self-absorbed movie star meets a down-on-her-luck "ordinary" woman who teaches him the true meaning of life.

Prime Video drama presents mother versus girlfriend showdown

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 19/09/2025

» The story of a mother-in-law clashing with her son's partner -- and the hapless son stuck in the middle -- feels universal. It's a tale many people can recognise, either from personal experience or from watching families around them unravel in similar ways. Prime Video seems particularly fond of this theme lately, frequently pushing dramas about dysfunctional families. This year alone, they've released titles like Better Sister and We Were Liars. Whether or not you'll enjoy their latest entry, The Girlfriend, depends largely on how much patience you have for this type of conflict-driven domestic drama.

Passion play

» I was a little hesitant before going into Pistol, a music biographical drama miniseries, as I wasn't that convinced how the filmmaker is ever going to pull off such a story. The Sex Pistols was no doubt an important group in rock music history, having so much influence on the 70s UK punk movement as well as DIY and indie rock music a few decades later. However, their career was rather short, lasting a little over two years. Most of the news while they were active was rather negative with coverage focused more on scandals caused by the band members' behaviour than the actual music.

Fast, not furious

» Niche filmmaker Nawapol "Ter" Thamrongrattanarit has a great knack for making small and simple stories into big ones. Most of Nawapol's movies revolve around the daily lives of people in the big city. In 2015, Nawapol defined his first major studio film Heart Attack as "a routine life of a freelance graphic designer". Or Happy Old Year, a high drama film from 2019 in which he simply replied in an interview: "A story about home reorganisation." But most Nawapol fans know that those movies are more profound than the simple definition of the director.

Final days of the fab four

» On April 10, 1970, English musician Paul McCartney shocked the world when he announced that The Beatles were no more. And when the world's most influential rock band breaks up, people want to know why, but no one could say for sure. Since the internet did not exist at that time, the only source people could rely on was media -- newspapers and tabloid magazines.

In search of a connection

» Besides social media and smartphones, dating apps have also become part of modern life. The trend of swiping left or right has made it easy to meet people from diverse social backgrounds. However, just like in real life, where good-looking people are most likely to benefit from the technology, it also has the potential to damage users' self-esteem if they cannot handle rejection. So, people tweak their profiles to draw more attention to themselves. Director Hernan Jimenez took this idea and mixed it with the message of being true to yourself and finding your worth as the plot of his new romantic comedy Love Hard.
