LIFE

A deadly game

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 01/11/2024

» First, we had Don't Breathe (2016) and A Quiet Place (2018), where silence is key, then Bird Box (2018), where seeing is danger. Hollywood's current fascination with sensory deprivation has a new addition: Don't Move, a thriller in which the protagonist faces a new kind of terror -- forced paralysis. In this film, the main character is injected with a paralytic agent by a killer, leaving her fighting to survive while her mobility fades.

Is the media to blame?

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 20/12/2021

» Can you separate fantasy from reality? A lot of people know that the media has a desensitising effect on people, especially children and teens. Whether it's movies, music or video games, the effect of viewing violence can lead to aggression. Personally, these stories have never been a direct issue with me. When I was younger I always wondered why people wouldn't be able to tell which story should stay in a movie or in our imagination, and which is reality. However, we still see more and more news of violence and regular crimes, which is a direct consequence of watching movies and various media.

LIFE

Half-baked superhero comedy

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 16/04/2021

» It's not difficult to tell the difference between good and bad comedy movies. A good comedy is simply a film that makes us laugh, and those that fail to do that are easily forgotten. When I first heard that the latest Netflix original Thunder Force was written and directed by Melissa McCarthy's husband, Ben Falcone, who has also directed movies like Tammy (2014), The Boss (2016), Life Of The Party (2018) and Superintelligence (2020), I was bracing for the worst. Although Thunder Force may be a step up from Falcone's previous films as it attempts to bring a new story to the table -- the superhero angle in this case -- everything else is straight from the script, from execution to the jokes which all missed the mark.

LIFE

Yet, there's another front in this fight; infectious diseases researchers, also known as virus hunters, who are trying to find viruses before they find us. One such person is American scientist Dr Kendra Phelps, a field researcher and ecologist who stars in an upcoming National Geographic documentary titled Virus Hunters which is set to premiere in Thailand tomorrow.
