A forgettable action flick

» How often do we find action movies produced by Netflix to be generic? Yet the platform keeps giving us new such flicks. Netflix's latest action/thriller, The Mother starring Jennifer Lopez, is about an assassin who has to come out of hiding to protect a child in danger. It seems as if it can garner attention, but will the storytelling and execution do it justice?

When only action makes sense

» Remember Michael Davis' action-packed Shoot 'Em Up from 2007? Even though it went on to become a favourite among action fans, the reviews when it first came out were divided. Some found the plot to be non-existent and had nothing appealing besides gunfights and explosions. Carter, a new South Korean action thriller about an amnesiac agent who is given an impossible mission, is another movie that follows the Shoot 'Em Up formula, where only action makes sense.
Alien threat returns

» Over the past few years, it's been amazing to see Chris Pratt's transition to a mega action star from a small role as Andy, a goofy boyfriend in the sitcom Parks And Recreation, to more sci-fi and action roles like Peter Quill/Star-Lord in The Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise, a mysterious mechanical engineer in space thriller Passengers with Jennifer Lawrence or dinosaur researcher Owen Grady in the Jurassic World franchise. Now Pratt is using his skills to play a military scientist with daddy issues who goes against time on a mission to save the world from an alien invasion in The Tomorrow War. Although lacking an original idea, with parts of the story derived from many past sci-fi hits, The Tomorrow War is still an enjoyable action-adventure with adrenaline-fuelled chase sequences.
Seems like old times

» To some, the three-month shutdown of movie theatres might not be a big deal. But for an avid moviegoer like myself, there's nothing like the thrill of entering a chilly, air-conditioned theatre with popcorn in hand. The reopening of theatres, and the release of blockbusters like Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Unhinged, a thriller starring Russell Crowe, along with Disney's live-action Mulan gave me a sort of comfort that the days of the old normal may not be too far ahead.
