Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 05/01/2026

» 2025 was a year defined by contradiction in the world of cinema. It was marked by the loss of several influential figures in the entertainment industry, moments that cast a long shadow over the year and reminded us how fragile even the most celebrated creative legacies can be.

Quirky, and a classic

» Wes Anderson, the mastermind behind quirky classics like The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (2004) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), returns to the screen with a delightful short film, The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar. This Netflix original is his second adaptation of a Roald Dahl story, following the success of Fantastic Mr Fox in 2009. Clocking in as a short film, it might just be the most intriguing and thought-provoking cinematic nugget of its time. Anderson, renowned for his unique storytelling and star-studded casts, weaves a tale within a tale, presenting audiences with a visually stunning and thematically rich experience.

Passion play

» I was a little hesitant before going into Pistol, a music biographical drama miniseries, as I wasn't that convinced how the filmmaker is ever going to pull off such a story. The Sex Pistols was no doubt an important group in rock music history, having so much influence on the 70s UK punk movement as well as DIY and indie rock music a few decades later. However, their career was rather short, lasting a little over two years. Most of the news while they were active was rather negative with coverage focused more on scandals caused by the band members' behaviour than the actual music.

LIFE

Silence interrupted

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 02/03/2022

» Much like his second feature film Blissfully Yours in 2002, serene stillness is the first impression we get from Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Memoria (in local cinemas tomorrow). Everything remains silent for a long period of time, but suddenly there's a loud booming sound resounding in the head of Jessica, played by Tilda Swinton, a British expat living in Colombia. The noise is loud enough to wake her up from the bed of her hotel room, as she begins experiencing a mysterious sensory syndrome. It forces Jessica out to the city and through the jungle in search of the source of the sound. From that moment on, the sound plays a crucial role to the story in Memoria. While this strange sound is the main inspiration for the film, it is also what Apichatpong has been struggling with over the past few years.

» Seven years ago, only a few people living outside the Philippines would have heard of director Erik Matti or his crime thriller masterpiece On The Job, despite it being a film to likely revive the long dormant action genre in the Philippines. Thanks to the age of streaming services, the film has recently landed on HBO GO, where Thai viewers can watch it for the first time in the form of a six-part miniseries.

» We're currently halfway through the fifth season of Rick And Morty and the show is still going strong. This time, the 10-episode season has no breaks. That's right, they're not breaking the season in half as they did for Season 4 between 2019 and 2020 due to Covid-19.

LIFE

A post-apocalyptic fairytale

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 22/06/2021

» A dystopian story about a mysterious virus that almost wipes out humanity may not sound like escapism right now as the real world deals with its own pandemic, however, the new Netflix hit series Sweet Tooth has elements that take a slightly different approach.

Battling sandstorms and scary spiders

» It seems like a very challenging task to successfully adapt hit video games into live action TV and movies as the quest has frustrated far more creators and studios than it's rewarded. High expectations from diehard fans often hobble these adaptations from the start. Yet one fearless filmmaker is Paul W.S. Anderson who moved from one video game franchise adaptation to another, beginning in 1995, with the martial arts fantasy Mortal Kombat to the zombie apocalypse action-packed Resident Evil franchise, four of which he directed. Anderson is back again with Monster Hunter, his latest directorial sci-fi action effort, now showing at cinemas.
