Prehistoric pride

» Piriya Vachajitpan, the founder of Museum Pier, has been interested in dinosaur fossils and prehistoric animals since he was a high school student in the US. Piriya saved money from his part-time job as a dishwasher in the school cafeteria to travel to view dinosaur exhibitions and fairs in many American cities. It was an eye-opening experience which encouraged him to collect fossils.

» Since water is an essential and vital component for life on Earth, the White Elephant Art Competition chose "Water And Alternation" as its theme for 2025. Prof Yanawit Kunchaethong, a judge at the competition, commented that "Water And Alternation" is a relatable topic which allows artists to showcase their imagination through a variety of techniques.

In addition, there is a chair along with bags and shoes in the same area.

» Organised by Thai Beverage Plc, the art competition White Elephant Award returns with an exhibition with the theme "Biodiversity". Among numerous artworks, two art pieces, Land Of Life (wooden block) by Teerapon Phopaesri and Diversity Within Dominated Condition (a sculpture made from lead, steel, paper mache and resin) by Chaiyan Ninlabon won the White Elephant Prize and the Grand Prize, respectively.

» In collaboration with World Animal Protection Thailand, the song Pai Hai Sood Yood Show Chang (No Elephant Show) by rapper Tawanwad "TangBadVoice" Wanavit was released earlier this month in observance of World Elephant Day, which falls on Aug 12. The video for No Elephant Show depicts the story of a Thai man taking his foreign friend to see an elephant show. Tawanwad appears in the car taking them to the show, with the rapper explaining to the Thai man through rap that behind the scenes, elephants experience cruel training. The music video includes real footage of the abuse suffered by elephants in Thailand.

» Nichanan A-ngi was one of the many thousands of hotel employees laid off during the Covid-19 pandemic. Unusually, the 31-year-old former receptionist spent her unplanned free time learning macramé, the art of using knots to create decorative items with textiles. And Nichanan’s mother and friends certainly did not anticipate her taking macramé seriously and transforming it into a business, Macrame by Nicha.

» The 12th White Elephant Art Award focuses on realistic and figurative art which refers to art that depicts everyday objects, figures or subjects in a realistic or true-to-life way. After The White Elephant Art Award announced a theme of "Cherish The World", two artists -- Jarun Pan-onta and Surapun Kwansaensuk -- drew inspiration from nature to create paintings. As a result, Jarun won the White Elephant Prize while Surapun won a special prize called the Khunying Wanna Sirivadhanabhakdi Award, created for the first time.
