» Last weekend there were some very contentious penalty decisions given in the English Premier League. That's nothing new of course, but it's becoming a regular occurrence and makes one wonder if the authorities should take a long hard look at the rules. » When I watched Reading at Elm Park as a kid back in pre-historic times, a few minutes before the final whistle, over the public address system would come the stern message: "Please don't run on the pitch after the match." Of course as soon as the final whistle sounded, dozens of kids would run onto the pitch, for the simple reason they had just been told not to.

» The death of Sir Roger Bannister, the first man to break the four-minute mile barrier, gave us a reminder of the days when a lot of the top sports men and women were amateurs, having regular occupations, and participated in sport in their spare time.
