» The wait for and the painfully gradual lead-up to the release of Friendly Fires' third studio album, Inflorescent, have been a year-long affair, a process that began early last year with a quiet banger Love Like Waves. The way the album unfolds over the course of 15 months is perhaps not the most ideal in the age of music streaming where artists and labels have to appease elusive algorithms and metadata by constantly pumping out what they hope would be a next big smash.

The piece further illuminates her self-produced debut EP Stray, a stunning release that, while deservedly vouched for by Apple Music Thailand, somehow failed to woo a local radio station because "they couldn't figure out what category I fell into".

» The year has proved to be yet another exciting one for music. It's officially the year of comebacks, as we saw new releases from some of the biggest names in rock, dance and pop _ including David Bowie, Daft Punk, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey and, quite unexpectedly, Beyonce. This year also brings us a thrilling array of newcomers, both homegrown and imported, like Chladni Chandi, Part Time Musicians and Lorde. As 2013 draws to a close, we round up some of the best singles that we've featured in the past 12 months to remind you of how great it all has been.
