LIFE

We didn't start the fire

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 10/03/2017

» People, it's not even April yet, and the city feels as though it's been chosen as the launch site for the opening of the gates of hell. Stay cool and hydrated. Make this your daily mantra. This, we're serious about. But as you sip your sweet ice coffee under some air-conditioned refuge, we offer you a light-hearted recap of a few funny, exciting or random bits of news that are theoretical and totally scientific explanations of why this country is so ******* hot right now!

Bewitched

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 10/02/2017

» Over New Year's, I watched a local film in Los Angeles that peaked on so many levels. It was called The Love Witch. The story centres around a sensual dark-haired witch, played by the stunning Samantha Robinson (look her up), who uses magic to make men fall in love with her. It's absolutely brilliant. Seriously, go search and watch it. Because not only did we enjoy The Love Witch for its witty commentary on love, sexuality and feminism through the medium of comedic horror, the film left us obsessed with ultra-sassy 60s fashion. Ever since, we've been looking for ways to pay tribute to the Love Witch's style, and what better time to unleash the attitude than during the season of love.

The wolf of whiteline

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 03/02/2017

» If you're a night owl and enjoy the chillaxed creative community of Silom (over Sukhumvit's), then for sure you've been to Whiteline and Safe Room a few times. Opened for two years now, this nightclub/alternative art venue has made a name for itself with standout events like the annual 60 Second Film Festival, which is coming around again in a week. We wanted to get to know the guy behind this cool hub, so we called up Oliver Wolfson and asked if he preferred cats or dogs — among other questions.

Actual goals

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 20/01/2017

» Resolutions, smesolutions, am I right? Do you find yourself setting them superficially year after year, only to carry them on to the next one? Or not even bother anymore? At the same time, you know goals are essential to achievements. So maybe what we all need is to have a real and open exchange about them.

The localised dane

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 09/12/2016

» If you've ever sourced any basic kitchenware from Central, you may own something of Scanproducts and not even know it. Established 20 years ago as a premium Danish homeware company in Thailand, Scanproducts has in recent years come out with local brand that is more relatable to this country's middle class homemakers. We had a chat with the company's founder, Danish fellow Jens Viggo Bergsoe, to learn more about "local brand by Scanproducts", the climate surrounding home décor in Thailand and a bit of his personal life, which only furthers the Scandinavian reputation for being model people.

When Thai people gather

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 04/11/2016

» This country may have a reputation for indifference, but there have been a few instances in recent memory which we can also be a population of the least chill. Because when it comes to matters of the heart -- our hearts -- we'll waste no time getting to the epicentre of what matters most, demonstrating this incredible and insuppressible passion. This week, we'd like to remember, through photographs, a few major occasions in which our love for something brought us together, physically, in one space.

That one friend

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 09/09/2016

» This week in Guru, we celebrate the oddballs in our lives. Those people we know who are "a little" off-centre, regular commuters on the road less travelled, you know, the unicorns. Every so often, for selfish reasons, we might wish they were a little more "normal", but always immediately after saying that, we eat our words realising the tragedy we've just described. So let's take some time to identify and appreciate the people who entertain us by just being them. Here are nine of the most common weirdos in any Bangkokian social circle.

Inked for a week

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 24/06/2016

» What's left to talk about in style after clothes, accessories, hair and make-up, but skin? And we're not just after skincare, which takes ages to show subtle results, but something trendy you can do to your skin instantly, temporarily and harmlessly for some dramatic self-expression. The hot topic in style this week is sticker tattoos. The benefits of this form of peel-on skin décor are vast, ranging from deliberately annoying conservative folks to entertaining the idea of getting a real one. Whatever your motive, you gotta know what's out there, and that's where we come in. Guru reviews three local vendors for temporary tatts, all of which can be ordered via your phone.

Brilliantly Basic

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 27/05/2016

» As depressing as it sounds, basic clothing is like that one underappreciated friend who's constantly got our backs. It may be because, individually, basic pieces are so underwhelming, possibly even unattractive, that we don't worship them like those unique, glamourous friends who may end up screwing us over when the tides change. Basic would never do that though, so this week we recognise the simple items we need in our closet.
