Songkran summertime

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 09/04/2021

» Summer is here and Songkran is around the corner so get your water guns ready because Bangkok is about to become an all-out water war zone! Wait, no water battles? For two consecutive years? Sadly, Songkran hasn't been the same since Rona came around and it seems like we have to wait yet another year to -- hopefully -- celebrate Songkran in the wet and wild way we're familiar with. But that doesn't mean your summer has to be a bummer or that Songkran has to be spent cooped up at home -- though we know it's certainly tempting since it's getting too dang hot outside. Here are some things you can do this Songkran summertime besides being sad that water fights aren't a thing again this year.

» 2021 is finally here and we can finally put "The Year That Must Not Be Named" behind us! Though we're not entirely out of the woods yet, the fact remains that a new year means we can turn a new leaf and look forward to the things yet to come this year. Here is a list of things that are in store for us, which hopefully -- fingers crossed -- may actually take place this year.

Behind the mask

» Coronavirus -- you've been hearing about it, reading about it, but knock on wood you haven't been infected by it. The world has been sent reeling these past few months because of the virus. Everyone is in a state of panic. Masks are in short supply, sneezing in public places garners dirty looks and everyone is convinced they're living in Raccoon City and the Umbrella Corporation is behind it all (get the Resident Evil reference?). But let's all chill for a sec, which may be difficult to do given the circumstances, but we need to get our facts straight which, apparently, is hard for the Thai Ministry of Public Health to do. Let's talk about Covid-19 and how it affects us in Thailand.

Living the life

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 17/03/2017

» It's typical nowadays to hear about an up and coming young artist, and if you think Ananya Birla is just another one of those, then you are sorely mistaken. True, the 22-year-old from India released her single, Livin' the Life back in November. But that's not all there is to Ananya. At 17, she founded Svatantra Microfinance, all the while studying at the University of Oxford and playing gigs. She also co-founded two other companies. The artist/entrepreneur was recently in Bangkok working on the remix of her single which is now out on iTunes and Spotify. Guru sat down with her to ask her some questions, while simultaneously feeling guilty that we haven't done half as much with our lives.
