So much art, so little time

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 01/02/2017

» Chiang Mai got its fill last weekend, and now it's time for the Bangkok edition of Galleries' Night, organised by the French embassy. First of all, it just amazes you how active the scene is. Running on Friday and Saturday, there will be more than 40 galleries participating in the event where venues open late into the night.

When medicine is the problem, not the cure

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 24/11/2016

» Thailand has an alarmingly high fatality rate due to antibiotic resistance derived from over-prescription and a widespread presence of the drugs in the food and water supply, according to research by Niyada Kiatying-Angsulee, manager of the Drug System Monitoring Mechanism Development Centre.

» The most pressing issue in the capital's art scene this month is, of course, the well-being of some hundred carp put in the temporary pool as part of photographer Rapat Bunduwanich's "Photo Festival", a show whose title tricks us into thinking that there are other people in the show.

Personal scars, political history

» In "Under The Same Sky", the latest exhibition at Nova Contemporary by photographer Tada Hengsapkul and artist Chai Siris, personal history and that of the world entwine. In no way does the show appear to strive at having these narratives untangled.

Art to float your boat

» A watermelon is in the centre of the screen, and we watch it being gradually squeezed as two pairs of hands continuously put rubber bands around it. On another screen, a woman is in the middle of nowhere and suddenly takes out a toaster before hurling it away with all her strength like a hammer throw.

Exhibition asks, 'Has happiness returned to Thailand?'

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 27/07/2016

» If "Fear" -- Manit Sriwanichapoom's latest photography and video show, which opened over the past weekend at H Gallery, Tang Contemporary Art and Kathmandu Photo Gallery (and at Yavuz Gallery in Singapore at the end of the month) -- isn't the hottest topic of discussion in the capital's art scene already, it soon will be.

Wet bodies

» Over the past weekend, it appears that practically every familiar face made it to Hotel Art Fair, a fair wherein hotel rooms, showers and toilets duly ceased to function temporarily to showcase art. Just like how the same crowd made it the week before to the opening of Bangkok Citycity Gallery's hit show by director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit, and just like they will this weekend head to MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum's inaugural show "The Serenity Of Madness" in Chiang Mai, the first retrospective of Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

The future, in reverse

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 08/06/2016

» On the surface, artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul's video of a night journey through a temple doesn't seem to be in dialogue with photographs of Sakhalin island by Japanese Tomoko Yoneda. Nor does there seem to be any connection between Field Recordings' video work documenting migrant workers on the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River and MAP Office's incredibly detailed imaginary map of "future Hong Kong".

Chart-ing Facebook

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 16/05/2016

» It has been eight years since writer Chart Kobjitti, national artist and two-time SEA Write Award winner, published his book Lorm Wong Khui, a collection of articles written for Si San magazine. Eight years is a long time, especially for fans of various generations who literally grew up with his writing, from the cursed life of Ai-fak in 1981's Khamphiphaksa (The Judgement) that won his first SEA Write award, and the tumultuous story of life, friendship and lots of booze in 1988's Phan Ma Ba, to a miserable account of age and death in a nursing home in 1993's Wela (Time), for which he won the award once again.

Out of the sunlight

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 28/04/2016

» Every use of the word "sunlight" in Duncan Macmillan's play Every Brilliant Thing, was replaced with "sunset" by director Pawit Mahasarinand in his Thai adaptation, which has just finished its run at Chulalongkorn University's Sodsai Pantoomkomol Centre for Dramatic Arts last week.
