» Nakhon Nayok has long been a popular destination for day trippers due to its proximity to Bangkok. Waterfalls remain all-time favourite attractions among tourists. Yet, there have been some changes. The sight of many teenagers and low-quality tourists talking and singing loudly and heavily drinking is no longer common due to stricter regulations, including a ban on alcohol in the national parks like Khao Yai. Another change -- many more tourists opt for going to farms and reservoirs to enjoy stunning views, cycling amid nature and visiting temples to seek spiritual solace.

Up from the deep

» Now buried several metres deep under the muddy ground in a former shrimp farm in Samut Sakhon province, a millennium-old ship once sailed many oceans of the world. The vessel, 25m long, had travelled from faraway lands to transport a variety of goods to cities on this part of the Earth before it sank here during the Dvaravati period (6th-11th centuries).

» At the age of 94, royal scholar Prof Prasert Na Nagara, renowned for his ability to read ancient inscriptions, still enjoys good health and goes to work at the Royal Institute every weekday. He continues to travel upcountry and abroad and strolls a couple of kilometres a day for exercise.
