A disjointed effort

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 04/03/2022

» 'A storm in a teacup" is probably the proper word to sum up Restless (Sans Répit), a new French crime thriller. It's a story in which the main character gets involved in an unfortunate accident and causes trouble. Although a problem may seem minor initially, when trying to fix it, things escalate to the point of chaos. Like the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading (2008), which had a premise of fake blackmailing that turns into senseless murders, Restless is similar but has more action and thriller elements. While some may enjoy the action and tension these situations create, a lack of character development and predictable storyline makes movies like Restless less memorable than they should.

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 14/08/2019

» Some nights nothing happens, and some nights too much happens. For one crew of rescue workers -- volunteers at one of Thailand's largest rescue organisations, Ruamkatanyu Foundation -- each shift is predictable only for its unpredictability. Nights at their base beneath a Nonthaburi overpass are spent monitoring the police radio channel for its most commonly-used word -- accident.

Isis destroyed

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 06/09/2018

» As most of the hijackers responsible for the 9/11 outrage were Saudi Arabian, it stands to reason that the US would take the kingdom to task. Instead, Washington turned its ire on Afghanistan and Iraq. How could that be? In fact, it made sense. America is Saudi's biggest oil customer and didn't want it to stop flowing, the more than 3,000 dead at New York's Twin Towers notwithstanding.

» In the US, and many other lands, justice is in the hands of the police and the courts. The citizenry must abide by their decision. But this overlooks the fact that vengeance is a human instinct.

The urban biker

Muse, Sirinya Wattanasukchai, Published on 14/06/2014

» In a crazy city like New York, people still ride bicycles. It’s one of the most practical modes of transport, as mentioned in Casey Neistat’s foreword to New York Bike Style. (A few years ago, the American filmmaker makes a short video mocking the impracticality of New York bike lanes. In the clip, he actually gets a ticket for not riding a bicycle in the bike lane — which is often blocked by things like trash cans, construction ladders, even a police car!)
