» By the haystack next to a rice field, Yothin Kijbai sung out in high-pitched, rhyming Isan verses that he apparently knew by heart. Dressed in a light blue costume adorned with glittering sequins, the 68-old-year is not a madman but a well-known "comedy molam".

» This year visual art, compared to theatre and film, has not been all that politically active despite 2014, with its mass protests, coup and subsequent outcry for freedom of expression being one of the most tumultuous years in recent history.While most galleries have retained their stance on putting on exhibitions purely for aesthetic purposes, it's exciting to see a few small art spaces that have been active in providing alternative venues for young artists. In this round-up, Life asks five curators to pick their favourite shows of the year.

A reflective stage

» As per tradition, this year's Bangkok Theatre Festival kicked off last weekend at Santi Chaiprakan Park in Bang Lamphu, with a packed two-day programme. The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), however, is the main arena for this year's event, and will host a wide range of shows, from musicals and movement-based performances to pantomime and puppetry, for the next two weeks.

Dark laughter

» Director and playwright Nophand Boonyai once saw a random photo of four Japanese girls staring dead-faced at the camera. He pondered as to how they had got that look in their eyes and then heard the song I Only Have Eyes For You. He suddenly had a vision of Earth, seen from outer space: there was a dead body lying still, pale white in the moonlight.

» On the right hand side is a storm of colours that invite you to ponder its intricacy. On the left is an aerial view of a landscape of forest and blue-gray water. These two massive three-panelled abstract works, by Joe Delaney and Soichiro Shimizu respectively, form the entrance to the recently-opened Bridge Art Space, the latest addition, following hot on the heels of Speedy Grandma and Soy Sauce Factory, to the growing art community in Charoen Krung.

» An old photograph inside Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello, northern Italy, shows a young, long-haired man brimming with joy and anticipation as a red racing car approaches the finishing line. It shows the 1974 Spanish Grand Prix and Niki Lauda’s first grand prix victory. The young man is Luca Cordero di Montezemolo; then Ferrari Formula One team manager and now, more than 40 years later, the chairman of Ferrari.

A beautiful war

» ‘Gentle War”, on display at 100 Tonson Gallery, is not only an appropriate name but also provokes the viewers’ interpretation. Curated by Brian Curtin, the exhibition puts two different artists together. While Belgian artist Peggy Wauters works with a variety of media centred on historical myths and carnival culture, Israeli artist Nir Segal focuses mainly on textiles and abstract ideas.

» Toot Yung Art Center’s current resident artist Maja Hurst thinks it’s for other people rather than herself to decide what type of artist she is. While some call her a street artist as her murals can be found on large-scale buildings in cities such as Cape Town, Cologne, Atlanta, Rio de Janeiro and Berlin under the alias Tika, there’s a strong graphic design element to her work.
