Saudis look beyond oil to woo Asia

News, Published on 28/03/2017

» King Salman bin Abdulaziz's trip to Asia has been characterised as either a routine visit to bolster the already strong trading ties between Saudi Arabia and Asia, an effort to diversify ties away from the US or as a way to attract investments into Saudi Arabia and promote its own. The reality is that it's a combination of all the above. Yes, oil is an important part of the story, but not the only part.

Anti-trade policies would make the poor poorer

News, Michael Schuman, Published on 25/01/2017

» Without question, the most exciting economic story of the past half century has been the dramatic, and probably unprecedented, decline in global poverty. Those sound like big numbers until you compare them to 1990, when nearly two billion people languished in poverty -- a staggering 37% of the global populace. Such progress has raised the real possibility that extreme poverty can be eradicated in the not-too-distant future.

Activist ACT scores hit

News, Editorial, Published on 07/03/2016

» The measures taken by members of a major business group to condemn newscaster Sorrayuth Suthassanachinda caused him to be forced off the air. For the first time, an action by the Anti-Corruption Organisation of Thailand (ACT) has had a dramatic effect. Sorrayuth, convicted of fraud, has now vacated his role of news anchor on his Channel 3 broadcasts. Prior to this, the ACT had been innocuous in its efforts to chip away at ingrained corruption. This should encourage it to step up and become more active.

The big issue: Until we meet again

Alan Dawson, Published on 06/03/2016

» It took years for Sorrayuth Suthassanachinda to become the face and voice of reliable news. And it took a few minutes for a Criminal Court judge to tell the country that maybe all that public trust was a bit misplaced.
