Savoury spin-off

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 08/07/2016

» Following the success of the first OSHA Thai Restaurant & Bar on Witthayu Road, OSHA Café recently opened at Asiatique as the more affordable younger cousin with all new offerings. This, by no means, the café is downsizing on flavour.

Golden state on a plate

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 03/04/2015

» Opened in Feb, Abbot is named after Abbot Kinney Boulevard, a trendy and vibrant stretch lined with eateries, shops, art galleries and palm trees in California. The neighbourhood is named after American developer Abbot Kinney, and was dubbed "the coolest block in America" by GQ magazine. As a restaurant, Abbot offers California cuisine, which focuses on healthy creations made from local ingredients — minus the complicated cooking techniques. Add in a penchant for incorporating elements from different cuisines, and you can expect pretty unique fare. Hanging light bulbs with exposed cords and a bare floor convey the casual-yet-cool vibe, while touches of blue may remind you of the coastal state. The high ceiling also lends the place an airy and spacious feel. The mezzanine level (yet to open at the time of our visit) offers a more formal atmosphere and a private room. Most of the diners here are expats.

Burgers, baos & bikes

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 17/10/2014

» At the risk of sounding lame (and giving away our zero knowledge about motorcycles), a burger is kinda like a bike (except for, you know, you can't take a bite out of the latter). You see, the patty is the engine. The sauce is the fluid stuff that keeps the engine working well. The buns are whatever part of the bike that keeps everything together. This is also the basis behind a new burger joint with an interesting concept called Scrambler Cafe. Besides five pre-built burgers on offer, you can order a "custom bite" burger where you can select what type of bun, patty and sauce to go into it like you would do with a custom bike. The concept and ownership of the open-air cafe, which is located at Market Place's parking space, belongs to Ducati Thailand. The place is named after Ducati's iconic motorcycle model named Scrambler, which will make a comeback around the end of this year. A cooking team from 50/50 restaurant controls the kitchen. Two shipping containers have been stacked up, painted bright yellow and turned into the kitchen. The dining area is covered with fake grass and there are about 30 not-so-comfy chairs. Judging by the casualness in the air, this isn't a place to take someone on a first date. The patrons aren't just bikers as the venue also welcomes office workers, bicyclists and expats.

Bikini Diaries

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 05/07/2013

» Today marks something important to both womankind and mankind - it's Bikini Day, baby! July 5 commemorates the introduction of the bikini in 1946 by a French automobile engineer/fashion designer named Louis Reard. Your mission for this special day is to celebrate it by wearing a bikini/watching girls in their bikini. Although boobies and booties alone are more than enough to make this our new favourite holiday, we've also decided to research Thailand's history with this two-piece wonder.

Bangkok songkran agendas

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 12/04/2013

» OMB! We have five days off in a row because the cabinet kindly declared that this year's "official" Songkran break starts from today until Tuesday. Say what you will about PM Poo, but she is so right in giving us a long holiday since we can't function properly during this kind of heat anyway. Anyhoo, that's over 7,000 minutes we're supposed to wisely spend relaxing before going back to the grind on Wednesday. And even though some shops and places in Bangkok may be shut during the Thai New Year, there are plenty more options for celebrating. Here's what we suggest you do and, hopefully, you may also find a deeper meaning of Songkran Festival (besides throwing water at strangers) along the way. Happy splashing, everyone.
