An underwater friendship

» My Octopus Teacher recently won the Best Documentary category at the Academy Awards, which may be a huge surprise for many. This story of a man and his unlikely friendship with an octopus in the cold ocean off Cape Town, South Africa triumphed over other heavy hitters this year like Alexander Nanau's Collective, a shocking exposé of needless deaths in Romania; Time, a film about a wife fighting for the release of her husband who was jailed for 60 years; or Crip Camp, an Obama-produced story about the battle for disability rights in the US. But for whatever reason, My Octopus Teacher was seen by critics as the type of underdog story the Oscars love. However, was the film really that great? Well, not really.
Half-baked superhero comedy

» It's not difficult to tell the difference between good and bad comedy movies. A good comedy is simply a film that makes us laugh, and those that fail to do that are easily forgotten. When I first heard that the latest Netflix original Thunder Force was written and directed by Melissa McCarthy's husband, Ben Falcone, who has also directed movies like Tammy (2014), The Boss (2016), Life Of The Party (2018) and Superintelligence (2020), I was bracing for the worst. Although Thunder Force may be a step up from Falcone's previous films as it attempts to bring a new story to the table -- the superhero angle in this case -- everything else is straight from the script, from execution to the jokes which all missed the mark.
Deep dive in a crowded pool

» Four years ago when the Justice League film first came out it got mixed bag reviews. Many DC comic and movie fans even dismissed the film for its poor, unfocused script. It was mostly because the film suffered a difficult production and underwent major changes between 2016 and 2017. It was reported that Zack Snyder even stepped down during the production due to a family tragedy, then Joss Whedon came in to change things around and probably ended up changing things a little too much than they should have been.

» There's a certain type of thriller movie in which filmmakers try to bring something different to the table by designing a plot with the main character getting stuck in a single location while having to deal with a series of life-and-death situations. This is quite challenging as it forces the director, writer and actor to step up their game as there is limited space and scenery and most of the time, they fail to pull it off.

High expectations from diehard fans often hobble these adaptations from the start. Yet one fearless filmmaker is Paul W.S. Anderson who moved from one video game franchise adaptation to another, beginning in 1995, with the martial arts fantasy Mortal Kombat to the zombie apocalypse action-packed Resident Evil franchise, four of which he directed. Anderson is back again with Monster Hunter, his latest directorial sci-fi action effort, now showing at cinemas.

» Kaley Cuoco has come a long way since her role as Penny, the hot girl next door in hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Spanning 12 seasons between 2007 and 2019, The Big Bang Theory was a successful comedy for a whole bunch of reasons. Besides its intellectually stimulating and subtle humour, fans can't deny the fact that Penny's character was one of the most important ingredients that kept the show rolling for over a decade. However, now that the show has ended, Cuoco did not miss a beat to drop a brand new show with a bang of her own.
