» How do we picture the world and ourselves? That is one of the key questions asked in "An Atlas Of Mirrors", the fifth edition of Singapore Biennale, which opened last week at various venues with the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and SAM at 8Q as the main spaces. As many as 63 artists and collectives joined and the result is a gushing forth of narratives -- collective and personal, historical and contemporary, factual and imaginary.

A beautiful yet random mess

» Perhaps "Heavy Metal", a new show at Tars Gallery, was not that well thought out. That was just an initial response, though. The whitewashed walls and good lighting of this newly opened space make a good start for any show; the clean minimal set-up of its debut show "Untitled 1" last year was proof of that. But now, it's a lot more complex -- "messy" may be the preferred term -- primarily with a scatter of potted plants, bright pastel-painted canvases and images of Roman sculptures mounted on plasterboard.

» Singapore's Art Week is over but it doesn't mean there aren't any good remnants left. The newly-opened National Gallery, for one, is hardly what one would call a remnant, with a comprehensive collection of works by Southeast Asian artists from the 19th century onwards which would take at least a day to completely take in. There are also, of course, a few major shows at the old military quarters-turned-art hub Gillman Barracks, such as Steve Mccurry's iconic photography show, Yinka Shonibare's new sculptures and Joan Jonas' acclaimed "They Come To Us Without A Word" exactly as seen in last year's Venice Biennale.

» This month's Art Matters begins with rather worrying news for H Gallery. After a visit to a photography show by Kornkrit Jianpinidnan, which just opened last Saturday at Bangkok Citycity Gallery, one fact hit me hard: Tam, H Gallery's dog in residency, may not be the only contender for the cutest canine in the capital's art scene.

» 'By The Glass", a current show at Serindia Gallery by British artist Louise Truslow, is perched somewhere between fine and decorative arts. Most of the kiln-formed glasses are bowl-shaped, yet, displayed against a lit table, they become more like abstract sculptures, immediately rid of function and practicality.

» Last year was a quiet for musicals in Bangkok. This year, however, we have already seen two musical productions, from a small adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion at Thonglor Art Space to the original Broadway musical Beauty And The Beast earlier this month. This week alone, there are two more productions, from veteran Yuthtana Lopanpaibul's Thai version of The Sound Of Music opening tomorrow at Muangthai Rachadalai Theatre, to, beginning on Saturday, a stage adaptation by Teravat Anuvatudom of the 2004 film Hom Rong (The Overture), the debut performance at KBank Siam Pic-Ganesha, Siam Square One.
