The best iPhone lens

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 24/08/2016

» Rumours abound about upcoming releases from Apple, including macOS (Sierra) which may be released in late September or early October, Macs which some claim are overdue (not until good and ready), and the next iPhone. This is rumoured to be arriving in the second week of September in the US and other favoured markets, with pre-orders opening on Sept 9.

Contain yourself, the new iPhone is here

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 04/11/2015

» Apple made a lot of money last quarter and is on for a record year. Those predicting lower sales in China were utterly wrong. Wall Street is ringing its hands because (they say) this sort of growth cannot be sustained and Apple will fail. I guess eventually, the Sun will stop shining too, but not yet. Predictions are usually pinned on share price and growth; but Apple's products, and profits, are better indicators.

Apple Music and updated iPods

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 19/08/2015

» I have been using Apple Music a fair amount, although last week spent time catching up with podcasts I had missed while friends were here. During the week, a number of local users who connect to the internet at home via True were complaining that Apple Music was connecting badly. I had a look in iTunes on the Mac and found that "For You" -- perhaps the most significant part of the service -- would connect, but no music was being played. I also tried the Radio stations. While Beats 1 connected, the Classical and Alternative music stations connected but would play no sound (like "For You").

Apple's Swift U-turn

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/07/2015

» With its Music service becoming available this week, Apple walked into a lot of criticism over the decision to make the first three months free: from independent music labels and (to great publicity) Taylor Swift. As she noted when withholding permission for iTunes to handle her latest album: free means no royalties for performers.

Scraping the barrel

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 17/06/2015

» Last week Apple held its Developer Conference (WWDC) for 2015, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. I watched the event live via the feed on Apple TV taking notes and again the next day (but more slowly) when I added some important points I had missed. Many commentators were disappointed because there was no hardware: no iPhones or new Apple TV that had been rumoured.

Flash is the black hole of the Macverse

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 11/02/2015

» In 2010, Steve Jobs wrote his "Thoughts On Flash" article, to explain why it was not available on the iPhone or the new iPad. The comments were followed by much derision, but anyone who has used Macs for even a short while will know that the temperatures rise, the fans speed up and the system begins to sag like my mother's chocolate cake.

Basic control of a Mac for new users

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 10/09/2014

» By the time you read this, Apple will have announced a range of new products at the Flint Center in Cupertino. There is bound to be much information (and misinformation) about the new devices and any related software, so I plan to view the presentation online and will make comments in the coming days after I examine the information carefully.

iPhone video — slowing things down, speeding things up

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 18/06/2014

» The last time I watched a football match was the World Cup final in 1966. I far prefer motor racing — four wheels and two. My satellite TV link usually has two channels that show MotoGP, but one has a poor picture and on the other they have not yet learned how to balance ambient noise with commentary.

More fun apps for iPhone cameras

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 13/01/2010

» Although I carry an SLR camera about with me, I find that increasingly I use the iPhone 3G to take pictures, partly because there are now so many apps, allowing special effects to be used easily.
