» Fondly called “Noom Passport Bookshop” by Bangkok’s bibliophiles, Amnat Rattanamanee left his well-paid nine-to-five at the World Bank at 25 to establish Passport Bookshop (523 Phra Sumen Road, 02-629-0694, goo.gl/T1wVF8. Open Tue-Sun 10:30am-7pm). Much treasured by independent-minded book-lovers, the success of the 13-year-old travel-themed bookstore is testament to its tenacity, cosy ambience and well-curated choice of books. Passport Bookshop is participating in Thai Independent Bookstores Week (Jun 21-29). » Kritsada Vadeesirisak lives and breathes music. He is a man with many hats but all that he wears are about making sounds. Kritsada, also known as DJ Kingkong (fb.com/KingkongZooStudio), makes commercial scores, runs electronic imprint Zoo Studio, oversees online magazine www.tempobkk.com, organises the DJ line-up for Grease Mon-Sat and produces tracks for his drum ‘n’ bass band Animal Machine. He also works on projects for Funky Gangster, Yonna and Sweed & Bunnyman. Beyond his busy schedule, the versatile beat enthusiast finds time to work in the studio and recently released EP Get The Funk on Beatport.

» Former full-time graphic designer Arak Ornwilai quit his nine-to-five routine to draw. After a few years of pursuing his signature style, he has become an illustrator, animator and author to watch. Under the alias of Sahred Toy, his tongue-in-cheek cartoon-style drawings have appeared on various commercial avenues including CD covers, festivals and magazines as well as his best-selling series of comic travel journals India Diary and Tokyo Diary. The colourful, vibrant doodle art conjures up everyday objects, light-hearted slices of urban life and some cheeky sex elements. Almost synonymous with his trademark character of a playful-looking pink Dildo, Sahred Toy has lent his quirky designs to Durex in their four-box collector’s set of Love Box Songkran Limited Collection available from now until the end of this month.

» With an unusual background, Wiracha Daochai, 29, possesses unconventional materials and perspectives for writing. Having grown up in a monastery, he spent eight years in the monkhood where he occupied himself with books. Thanks to his artistic instinct and imaginative mind, he secretly put pen to paper and sent his short stories to magazines. He had his first work printed when he was 14. His first paperback, Satanee Tor Pai (Next Station), written under the pseudonym “Larn Chai (Grandson)”, was published when he was 18. The wordsmith later entered the Faculty of Arts at Chulalongkorn University. Outside the classroom, he worked as a freelance columnist for a number of respected magazines, a creative at an entertainment conglomerate and a lyricist who penned for rock heavyweights like Bodyslam and Big Ass. Wiracha recently released a series of 10 stimulating short stories, Fon Aoey Tummai Jueng Tok (Why Is It Raining?), under small publishing house Yeti (fb.com/readyeti), which he co-founded with a group of bibliophilic friends.

» Fond of the art of photography from a young age, Benya Hegenbarth started working as a photo assistant in Paris and New York before returning home to shoot professionally. He uses a Canon EOS 5D, a Hasselblad Digital Back and his sharp eyes to capture emotion and beauty in portrait-style fashion photography for top glossy magazines. Benya also devotes his off-time for personal projects. Along with his photographer friends, Benya will exhibit his artistic exposition in a photozine to be unveiled later this year.

» Audiophile Nymph Hutakom is enthusiastic about sounds and music. Having studied sound audio engineering, Nymph is the fi rst Thai artist to release an album on Hitman Jazz. Her fi rst studio eff ort, 4Tet, is the fruit of all her own labour — she did everything herself, from compositing to writing and producing. With her uncommon avant-garde singing style, the eight tracks on the album echo her intimate and highly imaginative interpretations of jazz.

» The Mae Hong Son-born talent Sarun "Mac" Wongnoi has allowed his love for music to lead his way. Beginning his studies at a tender age, he holds a degree in music from Payap University and has passionately developed his skills throughout his life. Since his career took off in 1999 with vocal collective A Cappella 7, Mac has completed a string of studio projects including producing and songwriting for the likes of Etc, New & Jiew, Jennifer Kim, Dan Worrawech, Panadda Ruangwut and AF ’s Kacha. The pop producer recently made a comeback with a self-titled effort bringing a groovy spectrum of pop sounds by featured artists such as Etc and Boom Boom Cash.
