Take "Galleries' Night" last month, when the entire neighbourhood was taken over by art, from NACC and Cloud near Hua Lamphong train terminus to Speedy Grandma, Soy Sauce Factory, Serindia Gallery and Atta Gallery at O.P. Garden and Bridge Art Space, near BTS Saphan Taksin.

Sure, there's soulful lyricism from rapper Yasiin Bey (AKA Mos Def), the much-hyped R&B duo Rhye whose songs like Open are sure to transport you into a trance, and Com Truise's catchy synth pop. But at the festival our home-grown bands have a lot to offer too.

» In the painting The Treachery Of Images by surrealist René Magritte, there is the text, "Ceci n'est pas une pipe". But in a new performance by B-Floor's co-artistic director Jarunun Phantachat, she calls it Ceci N'est Pas La Politique (This Is Not Politics). This may well be a treacherous title too, considering how politically outspoken B-Floor has been, with Manoland by Teerawat Mulvilai in October and other performances over the year.

» Thepnara Kongsawang was uncomfortable elaborating on how he was punished by his drill sergeants during his one-year conscription at a military camp. What's done is done, the 28-year-old artist said, and his art was never meant as an act of hostility against the military in any way. It's simply a set of works designed to make comments and poke fun.

The Island Funeral scoops prestigious film award
