» It feels like there is an Hour Glass store at practically every main street corner in Singapore, but the Hour Glass store that rules them all is situated on Bideford Road, just off Orchard and right next to Paragon. Fashioned under the name Malmaison and having sat at that location since 2011, the opulent enclave of 745m² is largely under the radar to the common pedestrian, despite the fact that what is housed inside could well become your most lush watch-buying experience ever. Even a local tour guide confirms that most Singaporeans are oblivious to the lavish encounter that awaits inside.

» "This isn't just a bunch of squiggles fudging it, is it?" my photographer jokingly whispers. His question is legitimate, even if slightly demeaning. You'll be excused for asking that question if you're long-sighted, because to the naked eye, it really does look like a bunch of squiggly lines that add up to create a larger picture.

» Inside the intimate and cubic space of Nova Contemporary, a sense of serenity welcomes all visitors with monochromatic pictures of animals on the walls and clear plastic bunnies in the centre of the floor. The mild, seemingly plain artworks of animals on the walls don't beg to be photographed, but then again, pictures of them wouldn't do justice to the real thing anyway. They need to be seen up close through your own eyes.

» Last month, Fashion Field Trip returned for the sixth year to showcase their autumn/winter collections. Held at Sathon's event hot spot Bangkok CityCity Gallery, this year's shows are not the mega-spectacle they usually are, with at most 150 spectators at each show. Still, shows should always be about the clothes, and it's relevant that Vickteerut, Issue and Asava all thought it was appropriate to scale down and return to their roots. In this digital age, it's easy to drift away from the fact that the purpose of shows has always been for press, buyers and VVVIPs of the brand -- not, you know, everyone who owns a smartphone. There wasn't much legroom, with the gallery's small space and even more limited seats, this year, so here's our recap on the industry's big three this season.

» Last year, it was the tuk-tuk dress for the Miss Universe contest, hailed as innovative and also raising eyebrows for its curious design. This year, the original idea for the national costume to be worn by our beauty queen at the Mrs Universe pageant caused giggles rather than uproar: a Suwanna Chedi dress, or imagine our contestant wearing a golden pagoda on her body. The organiser decided to scrap it after much public ridicule, and on Monday unveiled a new design based on pla tapien, or a tropical carp-like fish.

» Spoken like a true human magpie, Yosuke Otsubo admits, "I think just like Andy Warhol, I will enjoy shopping until I pass away." Although working as the sales and marketing director for the premium segmentation of Levi's in Asia, Middle East and South Africa, the 59-year-old Japanese man is more famously known as a bigwig among the vintage clothes collecting crowd — being among the few who managed to turn the world's attention to the value of items that were just a few steps away from ending up in a trash pile.

» Out of the myriad of shiny, new stores at EmQuartier, a brightly lit one oozes organised and happy vibes. Those who frequent Tokyo are sure to know Beams, a lifestyle and fashion destination established in Harujuku in 1976, selling American duds and imports.

» The world instantly associates saris with India. But if Mehzabin Ershad could have it her way, it would also think of the mekhela chador, a half-sari that comes specifically from the Assam state in India. As one of the forces who shaped the northeastern region's fashion industry to the colourful array it is today, the pioneering fashion designer was recently in Bangkok to showcase her designs at "Celebrating Assam", at the inaugural "Festival of India in Thailand".
