Postbag: Black hides the truth

Oped, Published on 13/09/2014

» Re: “UDD doubts arrested ‘men in black’” (Online, Sept 11). Veerakarn Musikapong and Weng Tojirakarn, core leaders of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), cast doubt on whether the five “men in black” who were arrested are the true culprits or not. The two said that if the suspects were genuine, it is good news. But they suspect this is not the case.

Postbag: Certify the teachers

News, Published on 12/09/2014

» In answer to Ken Albertsen’s question (PostBag, Sept 7), “Who, with a straight face, can say certification makes a better teacher?” I can state that it definitely does. I base this on over 30 years of experience as an English teacher, teacher educator and examiner in Southeast Asia, the South Pacific and New Zealand.

Channel 3 hiding behind 'public interest'

Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 09/09/2014

» The management of TV Channel 3 seems to have forgotten that about a decade ago Supinya Klangnarong, then a vocal activist of the NGO the Campaign for Media Reform was charged with criminal defamation by Shin Corp for alleged defamatory remarks she made at a seminar entitled "Five Years of Thai Rak Thai – Shin Corp Gets Richer".

Postbag: Waste of good work

News, Published on 06/09/2014

» Gen Prayuth is unwittingly undoing the long-term fruits of his good intentions by quashing non-provocative public discussions. No one person, or even group, knows everything about a given topic. Remember Aesop’s fable of the blind men and the elephants? Reasonable men can, and often do, disagree.

Teaching false hope

News, Published on 12/08/2014

» Here's an example of unacceptable teaching practice. A few years ago, my wife's granddaughter proudly showed me her English exercise book from school. Her teacher, presumably Thai, had written a remark at the end of her entry of how good her English work was (in English, and badly misspelt).

Postbag: No one cares at SRT

News, Published on 12/07/2014

» Stories of the tragic deaths of innocent children are heartbreaking, especially if they could have been prevented. About 15 years ago my son, who was in his early teens, was travelling on the night train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok with a group from his school. A couple of hours after the kids and their chaperones had settled in their bunks for the night, my son felt the groping hands of a State Railway of Thailand (SRT) employee.

Postbag: Keep the iron grip

News, Published on 06/07/2014

» Yesterday’s editorial asks the NCPO to release its iron grip to make way for a civilian-run government. Why?
