How does your mango go?

B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 19/01/2014

» My friend, Femy, is excited. For the first time her mango tree is in bloom, and her husband can hardly wait to share the crop with relatives and friends. But it is not as simple as that; just because a tree has plenty of flowers does not mean these will develop into fruit.

Too big for your roots

B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 17/11/2013

» Reader Alan Platt, whose letter last month triggered a two-part article on bamboo, sent me another email to say that I was right about his plants being too big for their containers. "For their continued good health, I know I should put them in bigger pots," he wrote, "but I have a problem. I don't want them to grow any bigger, which will happen if I repot them.

Visiting thewet's forgotten delights

B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 27/10/2013

» In the past, when plant lovers and gardening enthusiasts wanted to spend some money on all things green, they either went to the Weekend Market at Sanam Luang or the Thewet market in the Dusit area. Thewet had an advantage as the row of permanent stalls along Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem, from the intersection of Sam Sen and Krung Kasem roads to the end of the soi just a stone's throw from the Thewet pier, was open every day. A few years after the Weekend Market was moved from Sanam Luang to Chatuchak, it was decided that separate days would be devoted to the plant market. Now nursery owners and plant lovers swarm to Chatuchak every Wednesday and Thursday, while Thewet seems to have been forgotten.

Adenium thrive when thirsty

B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 08/09/2013

» Continuous rains brought on by a succession of tropical depressions in the Philippines prompted a friend in Manila to send me a message of distress. "It has been raining for the past weeks and the sun rarely shines for long. I put the plants that you gave me in a dry place but some of the leaves are turning yellow. Help! I'm panicking, I'm afraid they might die. What should I do?", she asked.

Stop the madness _ let roadside trees reach their full glory

B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 14/07/2013

» I was travelling along Rama IV Road last week when I saw that some of the Pterocarpus indicus, known in Thai as pradoo, trees on the roadside had flowers. Pradoo usually flower in April and it is now July, so these were late bloomers. Especially spectacular was a tree across the streets from Chamchuri Square. It was small but it completely shrouded by flowers, which was unusual as pradoo shed their leaves two or three months after the end of the rainy season and develop new ones before or during blooming time in the summer, so the golden flowers are always accompanied by lush green leaves.

What's new in my garden pussycat Whoa, Whoa

B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 26/05/2013

» Cats are usually the neatest of animals. Before they defecate, they dig up some ground so that they can bury it afterwards. But a stray cat is posing a problem to Ms Gekimm, who wrote: "I need to ask you if a cat's droppings will harm my potted plants and how to keep the cat away. A stray cat has been doing its job on my rather big pot. I have applied vinegar trying to rid the scent so he/she will not come back, with no success. I used to put out Clorox in London, but I am afraid it will kill my plants. Can you advise me please?"

» The national agricultural fair annually held at Kasetsart University, commonly known as the Kaset Fair, has become synonymous with sweet tamarind. Every year, tonnes of Phetchabun's most famous product occupy a whole block and this year's fair, held from Jan 31 and wrapping up yesterday, was no exception.

Weed out your worries by gardening in new year

B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 06/01/2013

» How time flies! It seems like only yesterday when 2012 started, now another year has begun. What does this new year have in store us? Will it bring peace to the world, or more political turmoil? Will the world economic situation be better, or worse? Will mother nature be more benevolent, or bring stronger storms and even more floods?

Despite development, Phuket's botanical bounty remains

B Magazine, Normita Thongtham, Published on 18/11/2012

» The once sleepy tin-mining town of Phuket is now a thriving metropolis, with traffic jams a regular feature of every day. If the intrepid tourists who fell in love with the natural beauty of a deserted beach called Patong, where they stayed in 25 baht a night bamboo huts in the early 1970s, were to return today, they would not be able to recognise the place with its many five-star hotels, bars and shops. In Patong the only place not overrun with buildings is the beach itself, but even this is covered from tip to tip by reclining chairs for rent.
