Jet-setting Thais among early fashionistas

» These pictures have never been unveiled before, until now. Forty-five rare photographs developed from wet- and dry-plate collodion in the collection of the National Archives of Thailand testify to the development of women's fashion in early 20th century Siam in conjunction with the Western style. The elegant, enigmatic pictures are currently on view at the exhibition "Chattharat Phattraporn: Looking Back To Women's Attires In Global Fashion" at the National Library's Vajiravudhanusorn Hall. The show runs until Oct 10 and is held to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's 84th birthday.

» It was about 130 years ago that Thai Buddhists of Mon descent started making use of the sala kan parian, or "preaching pavilion", at Wat Tha Kham in the Bangkok district of Bang Khunthian. Since the pavilion was situated right next to the canal it was the first structure in the temple compound people would encounter after disembarking from their boats.

Buddhist ceremony in Samut Prakan

» From Saturday until Oct 7, Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district will host the "Rub Bua" (presentation of lotus flowers) ceremony, a century-old tradition of Thai people of Mon descent. A day before the end of Buddhist lent, or Ok Phansa, Buddhists bring lotus blossoms in a boat procession along Samrong canal from Bang Phli District Office to the temple to worship Luang Phor Toh, the temple's principal Buddha statue.

» Thon Buri, the portion of Bangkok lying on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, is widely known for its scenic waterways, historic temples, diverse culture and many culinary delicacies. A study, carried out by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of City Planning in 2012, listed 452 Buddhist temples in the capital, including 211 in Thon Buri. A self-designed walking trip, inspired by a trip led by culture expert Chulapassorn Panomvan Na Ayudhya, allowed us to explore six temples in the Thon Buri district of Bangkok Noi, most of which are in a sub-district called Bang Khun Non.

Tour de France Thailand

» On July 27, the second Road to Tour de France Thailand, celebrating the Tour de France, will take place on a 100km route in Nakhon Nayok province. The event will be held on the same day as the final round of the famous bicycle race in France.
